Tuning and Headers!

I will be purchasing headers soon, and have decided on doug Thorley. I just dont know if I want the shorties or the TRI-Y. About what am I looking at for installation. (Does anyone know of someone who is good and reliable in the Houston area?) Where can I get my computer tuned, again someone good and reliable and in the houston area preferably. Thanks again, and look forward to yall's replies they are always helpful.

Dustin

There was just a real big mod day in Houston a couple weeks ago. Mostly X-Runners, but we had some pre-runners there as well.

If you are looking for performance, get the Doug Thorley long tubes. Install is pretty straight forward, and there are a ton of guys in the Houston area that will help out. Mostly XR owners as I said, but all we do is mod vehicles, so you are more then welcome.

As far as tuning the ECU, there are a few options. For the best tune and best performance the APR X-1, though it is a bit on the costly side, it is well worth the money. But the URD MAF Calibrator is a good, inexpensive alternative.

With the long tubes, would I have to relocate my CAT's?

The long tubes remove the front set of cats. So it may or may not pass emissions, will depend on the test being administered.

The shorty's will keep the cats in the stock position. Like I said if you want performance the Long Tubes are better. You will still see some gains from the shorty's, but not nearly as much.

Well this is my everyday driver. I know I could get away with it back home in Louisiana, but I dont want to really chance in in the Houston area. But at the same everybody wants as much perfomance increase as possible.

I know a guy in Houston that has a pre-runner with TRD s/c, intake, long tubes, and catback, that just passed emissions. Not sure where he went or what he did.. but it was done.

I was told it you go to the right place and pay the right amount of money (about 125) your truck will pass emissions

I would really like to get some headers too but I have heard with the cats so close to the engine, performance gain is negligible.

Every little bit helps and its all part of a long term project.

Most inspection shops are looking for a code error. A knowledgeable inspector will know you have installed headers. However, unless they are familiar with Tacomas, they may not pick up on the four cat vs two cats.

I wrangled with this and went with the JBAs. It's a harder install, but no worries with the cats.
