TRD CAI how does it work?

Looking at pics its different than the rest, in that it has a box. Does the piping continue into the wheel well like stock? or does it end at the box? many cais have that conical end with the filter material.

If the piping does continue into the wheel well like stock, could I fit a snorkel on to this? would there be any benefit?

Should I get a TRD Cai and a snorkel, or just a snorkel?

the piping does go into the fenderwell, and it does have a conical filter. If you were going to snorkel it I I think it would work just like snorkeling the factory air intake.

I dont think it did much of anything for my mpg's b/c it sounds awesome and makes me put more foot in the throttle. If I were snorkeling my truck and still had the factory air box I would ditch the secondary, throw in an AFE drop in and then snorkel it for the CAI effect.

 

ok so you would skip the trd cai, take out the secondary filter of stock intake, and drop in an AFE filter?

 

if you plan on snorkeling it, definitely, you will save close to $250 +/- by not buying the TRD cai and the snorkel will act as the CAI.

 

Here is the TRD CAI. The piping stops at the enclosure, where it connects to the cone filter. There is a 'snout' that seals around the notch in the fender preventing hot air from the engine bay entering the intake assembly.

The problem isn't getting cold air, its restrictive piping that needs to be removed from the stock air box.

A snorkel attached to an aftermarket intake will get you your cold air, and remove the restrictive piping in the factory air box.

 

Is the TRD filter reusable? If so do you have to buy the cleaner and all that good stuff?

i looked up the specs on it. and i found this at the bottom. toyotaterritory.com

 

If you ever go offroading.. better not let your front bumper hit the water and throw it all up in your intake. I hydrolocked a 84 toyota pickup that way... the intake had a pipe that went to the grill JUST like what you got rigged up there.

EDIT: noticed you have a xrunner and prolly not going offroading...so this mod would work perfect for you. but to anyone else offroading be weary of rigging your intake like this.

 

I do not understand the purpose of the CAI in general doesnt seem like it would help out that much IMO

 

Cold air makes for a denser fuel mixture, thus more power.

Many of the muscle cars of the 60's & 70's were fitted with some type of cold air induction.

 

I know many people that run this with the TRD supercharger.

I noticed a difference when I installed mine!!!

 

definitely a difference with mine, too.

but in winter....much colder air (have seen 23deg on scangauge) means lots of fuel
