Cold Air Intake vs Safari Snorkel

Just bought my taco '03, cant decide whether I'm gona go with the k&n or airaid c.a.i. But my buddy just told me he used to have the snorkel which acted just like the c.a.i, but adds the height incase one ever feels like going through some puddles.(true or false?) So with that whos better?
kn - 57 or 77 series?
airaid- Reg vs sythnamax?
or
ARB safari snorkel?

 

Find out if any of those intakes are really cold air and then make a choice. Snorkel would be a true cold air intake.

Is there the possibility of having a high performance cold air intake like the volant collects air through the grill and be able to redirect the air through a snorkel? Just a thought

 

I dont follow......u want air in from both, or just the snorkel?

if both, I wonder if 1 would be negated due to the velocity of the other, and then cause a negative pressure (in the filter box/housing) instead of positive pressure.

 

snorkels require bodywork and fab to fit.... there's a reason it goes through your fender. overkill if you just want a CAI compared to an enclosed intake or something like the URD TCAI

 

i think he means have the option to do both, I.E. before a water crossing you can pop the hood, turn a valve, and have snorkeled air instead of CAI air.

thats exactly what i'm talking about. i mean is the fuel economy and power gains on a snorkel close or equal to a good cai? Thats what I would like to be able to do get good gas and power on the road and still be able to cross water. Sorry it took me so long to get back on here somethings jacked up with my email

 

how would to connect the two systems? wouldn't you have to fabricate a new like module, something like a "y" pipe and then comes the valve how?

What keeps someone from dumping water down your snorkel and into your engine once you start it? Some people just like to cause havoc! This is the only reason I've not done the snorkel mod.

 

Man that's messed up but my 9mm is a good deterrent for that and thanks for liking my idea I think it would be really cool to do and you would have to make the valve water tight too but I think it's possible maybe ill get around to trying to make something eventually

 

so i gave it some thought and talked it over with the guys. a (y pipe) would be the obvious choice and for the valve well make it valves. air/water tight of course. the valves would be just like the throttle body little flap. open one close the other vice versa. catch my drift?

as far as the havoc of getting shit poured down it. fab a little valve underthe pipe open it before you make the snorkel the main intake.

 

I just ordered and snorkel today and have an old style TRD CAI coming w/ my supercharger.

I was concerned about how to integrate them together for max air flow under normal use but still have the snorkel. I think I'm going to custom make the connection from fender cutout to the inlet of the CAI and remove it when I'm not out running my truck around in the woods and streams. Means the snorkel might be a show piece during daily driving, but a quick couple minutes and it'll be fully functional.

I'm also gunna do some testing to see how much flow difference exists between snorkel routing and direct thru CAI. If the difference is minimal...Might just not worry about it.
