I know I may get flamed for this but I'm running all 4 cats and no muffler with a custom Y-pipe out to dual 3.5" tips. Sounds good in my, and my friends opinions. Just got it routed to duals yesterday so I'm hoping once it breaks in a little it'll get deeper in tone. My buddy has a 2001 v6 Tacoma with no muffler ran out before the rear tire and it honestly sounds like a small v8. I love it, as well as most people that hear it. His is pretty loud while mine on the other hand is not loud at all (IMO). I felt a loss of HP at first but now it seems to have gained it back. If you want to see what it sounds like no muffler, just unbolt it at the cat back flange. It's fairly loud with it exiting under the truck but when you exit it anywhere else, it's not that loud in the cab at all. Let me know if you have any questions.

do u smell the exhaust in the cab real bad?? or is the smell noticeable??

you wouldn't notice it driving, but idling, your going to get some. guaranteed.

never dump exhuast under cab with any dd vehicle. just not a good idea.

i (without any first hand experience) doubt that headers will help you much at all. save some money, and just cut the factory muffler off and replace it with something you like. run some tailpipe to dump in a concealed location under the bed.

most brap for your buck

I was referring to NO headers or manifold... just open exhaust ports.
That'll warp valves.

People have run open long tube headers on hot rods for a couple of generations and it's not damaging.

Two different things.

Scavenging is when the length of the header tubes cause the exhaust pulses to align and an outgoing pulse into the header collector (expanding diameter) assists in drawing the following pulse out.

Backpressure is in a 2-stroke tuned exhaust.
The exhaust stroke is also the intake stroke... the exhaust scavenges some of the fresh intake charge out into the header. In a properly tuned system, just as the piston is about to close the port, a reversion wave comes back up the header and "slams" that extracted fresh charge back into the cylinder.
It's called being "on the pipe"


Both of these aspects cover a fairly narrow RPM range, and for our engines, the impact of scavenging is negligible.
Even top-fuel dragsters run open straight pipes... no scavenging at all.

Scavenging plays a large roll in 4 stroke NA engines. Top fuel dragsters are FI, and any time you force air into an engine, you dont need to worry about the scavenging affects. the reason variable valve timing is so affective in a 4 stroke engine, is that it allows different scavenging characteristics at various RPM's.

Thanks for the explanation guys. Also - seconding the motion on the CO being odorless. CO is a silent killer, so as noted by a few here, exit the exhaust in a safe location. Better safe than sorry.
