10w30 synthetic?

    been running 5w30, but i have enough of royal purple 10w30(acquired it from my grandpa who was friends with the owner/founder of RP) to do the next oil change.

    i am trying to be frugal and use what i have, is there any reason i shouldnt use 10w30?

    about 18k miles on a 4.0L

    driving conditions for this next oil change will be extreme highway miles (800+ miles at a time) as well as offroading when i start my road trip.

    rather than start a new thread... i also have 75w90 RP gear oil, should be good to go for front/rear diffs correct? (e locker rear) TRD O/R

    I don't think the 10w30 will hurt anything - go for it.

    If you are in a real cold climate it may start a little slower in the morning.

    Specified oil for the 2nd Gen is 0w20, 5w20, and 5w30 on some models.

    I wouldn't use it.


    But I wouldn't use RP in any weight, even if it is free.

    I experimented with a number of different oils in my motorcycle a few years ago.
    RP did not maintain viscosity any better than Castrol GTX. Mobil-1 and Amsoil held grade for 6000 miles. RP dropped from 20w50 to a 30wt in 2000 miles.

    RP spends more money on marketing and product placement on TV shows than they do on developing a good product.

    interesting. would you feel the same results would be had with gear oil?

    No clue... I haven't run any tests on gear oils.

    BUCKLE UP! It makes it harder for Aliens to pull you out of your Truck.
    I was told if the outside air temp is 60 degrees or above a straight 30w is fine.

    Redline 5w-40 or 10w-40. Done. Take that fuel wash. :p

    These newer trucks that say 0w-20, I'd go with a 30. I've been running a 40 since I purchased my truck in '06.

    You can always vary the weight, it's a trade-off between pumpability and film coverage. Now, for maintaining warrantee, and proof, you should stick with the recommended, outside of this, it's what fits your needs.

    Personally, I use 0W30 in my 09 4.0.
