Had both on my last rig (Xterra). Started off with the K&N but after it took out my sensor and Nissan said they woudln't warranty it again if the K&N was still on there, I went to the AEM. I liked the way the AEM sounded much more than the K&N. I didn't really notice a power difference but with the AEM I did gain a tiny bit more mileage.
Toyota is a completely different animal and I have no experience with mods yet. The Nissan couldn't be opened up no matter what I did.

Looks good, but your loss of low end torque and mpg must hurt

I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. From an engine management standpoint the Volant is just awful. It has a worse MAF accuracy then the URD intake. The volant needs a lot of work to be powerful. They altered the pipe sizing to trick the MAF into reading something that wasn't true, and its a big gamble on whether or not its going to increase performance, lean it out too much, or run so lean and knock that the ECU compensates and makes it run too rich.

Without going back and doing a custom tune, i don't recommend either the URD or Volant.

URD TRD or AFE, they are the only ones that wont decrease performance

My MPG went down by 2 if that is your def of performance.

Nobody likes to admit it, but more air=more gas

for those that have the AEM have you seen an increase in MPG? no matter how slight.

i have had AEM on 2 cars and loved them, no complaints, even when cleaning the filters.
    thanks.

AEM is at the top, know why? For us dezert guys when following a built prerunner at 65mph+ loads of dust is kicked up and so a shit ton is blown into the air intake. K&N with its spray on coat is just HORRENDOUS and just clogs up with dirt so the damn truck cannot breath. Never again will I buy a K&N with that terrible type of system, I got the AEM system and its trully heaven. Just take it off and smack it around a little bit and throw it back on it under 5 minutes and then its perfectly clean again, trully heaven.

And for you guys trying to squeeze that 1-2HP out of there air intake, yes i felt a little quicker throttle response in the 2-3500k RPM's, with most people that means they will floor it more to hear that UBER cool noise from the dry intake tho. But if you drive responsibly there is no doubt you can get stock or a little better gas mileage.

But if you want good gas you better you better have a good muffler to go with the new air intake thats a straight threw to let the air out fast just as it comes in, like a FlowMaster with its baffles will hurt your gas milage and your performence. If you get the AEM air intake and a Magnaflow muffler for example you will notice a difference.

Bottom line I HIGHLY recommend the AEM Brute Force or just the filter itself if you honestly go offroading alot becasue of its simple and brilliant dry filter system, it really is that much better and that much more convenient when cleaning and just keeping the air clean that enters the manifold. And performance wise is does better then stock, granet no air intake will make a significant difference, if you want results get some long tube headers and remove the cats haha

afe dry filter, its a little expensive but you could do the afe regular oiled intake and they both sound so freaking amazing, extremely loud when you step on it and go over 3000 rpms! :D
