3.4 can squat more but the 4.0 has higher bench press hands down.

By that logic the 3.4 is more powerful and durable.

I heard the 4.0 can do 100 pull ups though (kipping). By today's logic, that's the strongest.

ah that makes more sense, thanks for clarifying i was dislexically reading it i guess.

2JZ-GE and GTE are belt driven. So I guess a 4.0 is "stronger and more durable" than the GE and GTE too. But the 4.0 is a good unit, my brother in law has 215k on his 03 4runner V6 and it runs great and pulls hard.

If the belt snapped, some of the valves would remain in the open position while the pistons would continue to go up and down, smashing into the valves that weren't closed, bending them.

The same damage would occur whether it was a chain or a belt failure.

The 3.4 is a non-interference design. There will be no collision of valves/pistons.

As mentioned above, the 3.4 is not an interference engine, so even if the valves were stuck fully open, the piston would never come into contact with it. Thus no damage.

Its easier to break a belt then chain, overall both are good motors I would be happy with

Ah, that's good designing.
They planned in advance for the contingency of snapped belts.

3.4 is stronger all the way around. Might not be as efficient as the 4.0, thus the lower power output, but it is definitely an engine that was build with strength and durability in mind.

Iron block, closed deck is a good starting point.

4.0, is all aluminum, open decked with sleeve liners. Powder cast steel rods, and weak ring-lands.

I have always wondered what non-interference meant exactly, or how it works. Does it mean that when a piston is at TDC and a valve is stuck open it wont touch it?

Always heard of the 3.4 having head gasket issues.. Driven both and own a 4.0 and their both dang good engines period. Just the 4.0 is much more efficient and less maintenance imo..regardless its still a TOYOTA
