Question about adding a tailpipe...

I currently run a 14" magna-pack with a turn down before the diff. I was wondering if I attach a tail pipe would it help quiet it down a bit? And if it will should I go 2.5" or 3" in diameter? I've been told it might help with bringing back a little bottom end torque! Thanks in advance guys for your responses!

Yes you'll have less drone if it exits out the bed side. Keep the tubing stock size.

You maybe getting some resonance from under the truck with the turn down. By adding the tail pipe and projecting the sound out from the truck, it maybe perceived quieter to individuals inside the cab. As for 2.5 vs 3? Probably doesn't matter. There should be no restriction after the muffler so a tailpipe would have no effect on torque, unless you make one the shape of a pretzel and have 14 turns bent I to it.

Thanks for your reply! This does make alot of sense. However I've been told by a couple of exhaust shops that by adding a tailpipe it might help with low end grunt due to the fact the 4.0 needs a little bit of back pressure to maintain torque...

I took out my stock muffler to install a Magnaflow and lost low end torque, so I went back to the stock muffler. If you want to preserve low end torque, don't open up your exhaust.

Wow I was not expecting this news! Truly shocking that the oem set up performed better for you. However after a little searching I've seen similar cases likes yours. I don't know that going full stock will satisfy my fancy but I think if I surround my current set up with oem plumbing I might just get a slight bump in improvement.

No, I meant the OEM catback, then just add a drop-in muffler to that. Sell the entire Magnapack.

As for what to replace with,,, Magnaflow, Aeroturbine, Dynomax seem to have good names and feedback.

BTW, I don't recall seeing many reports of low-end loss with just a drop-in muffler replacement, assuming you keep to a 2.25 or 2.5 muffler. Not questioning tooter, but from what I've read, he may be an outlier.

Ok I totally agree with your opinion, my intermediate pipe is already 2.5 as well as the magnapack so I'm gonna try just adding a 2.5 tailpipe and go from there. If it doesn't change anything then I'll just go with a 22" long magnaflow.

Consider for a moment... at low rpms, very little exhaust is flowing and the stock exhaust is underutilized. It becomes more restrictive as exhaust flow increases when the rpms go up. You can gain more top end wide open throttle power with a more open exhaust, but you'll give up low end torque to get it.

Keep in mind that I have a 2.7... and Toyota uses the same diameter exhaust pipes on the 2.7 as it does on the 4.0, so opening up the exhaust on a 2.7 has a greater torque loss effect than on a 4.0.

I did install a low end torque enhancing header, but retained the stock muffler to keep the same backpressure.

Now I see, you're not an outlier, you are a 4-cyl I missed that in your sig, explains much.

OP, keep in mind as you are researching that the 4 and 6 cyl react differently to mods. I have heard few to no reports of low-end loss for the 4.0 with a muffler drop-in. Staying with a 2.25 or 2.5" system should not effect the 4.0 scavenging to any extent. Not sure why your Magnapack is acting like that.

This is very good info, I didn't know that both engines utilized the same size plumbing. As I mentioned above I'm gonna baby step my way as this is not a cheap project.


I wish adding shorty headers was easier on a 4.0! From what I've read short tube headers are more directed to low end power, long tube headers enhance top end more than low end...

The consensus of opinion is exactly the opposite. Long tube headers enhance low rpm torque and short tube headers enhance high rpm performance. It's just one reason I chose an LCEngineering header over Doug Thorley. LCE succeeded in folding the runners of a long tube header into the confined space of a short tube header...



...so that it fits perfectly with no other exhaust alterations.

That header looks of the best quality I wish they catered to the 4.0! I'll have to just get with URD about long vs short headers cause I opened up a can of worms researching the whole header thing...

LCE produces a lot of Toyota 4 banger stuff but maybe one day they'll expand their product line to the 4.0. They produce top notch quality components. I've run their superbly designed headers on my Tacomas for over a decade.

From what I've see of their site URD is an innovative company and I don't believe that you could go wrong buying their products.
