Help to Restore Air Intake Back to Original

My girlfriends ex decided to upgrade her air intake system with a nice K&N cold air intake system last year and to date she cannot pass a smog check.
My best completely uneducated guess tells me its because 1) the device is illegal in California, and 2) one of the sensors has been disconnected, and when it is connected, the vehicle will not start.

So the bottom line is that I need to find a way to get this thing legal and smogged. Iím entertaining all ideas that get her legal and keep the cost to a minimum. It can be anything from finding the solution to getting that sensor working to replacing the air intake system with original equipment.

This is a 96 model with the small 4 Cylinder engine.
We are located in Tustin California. Thatís in Orange County. Ill entertain solutions.
Thanks!

It would be nice if you could find someone else in OC with a 2.4 and stock intake so that you could swap intakes just for the test.

Try "want to trade" ad in the Gen1 for sale section.

You say, "uneducated guess", but don't they tell you why you fail a smog test when it's tested??

Also, you need to find out what sensor is disconnected before we can provide much guidance. If it's the MAF sensor, the sensor might be gummed up with K&N filter oil, but not sure, unplugging the MAF sensor will normally just set a code, but will run by tuning the fuel using the A/F sensor readings.

OK, Thats the air temp sensor.
When its connected to a cold engine it will start, but once it gets warm, it wont even start.
