Sure you can gain "a lot", but 50% more mpg? I have a really hard time believing it. I mean we are still trying to push an underpowered brick down the road at 70+ mph.

Probably the first time disagreeing with Torspd but like memario said, no way you are gaining 50% more MPGs by tuning. You really think Toyota Engineers really left that much on the table?

Also, I got no problem being wrong on this topic. Gaining 10MPG from a tune would be insane. You would be an idiot if you had a Tacoma and didn't spend 1k for this, but not way it's true.

Yes. I do. And not only do I "think" they do, know they do. However, let's take these pictures as an example of what is capable with the un-modified ECU. '05 Xrunner, with '09 headers, TRD gen 1 CAI, NST pulleys, my intake manifold spacer copy, and TRD catback.

    On 93 octane.

Now, if that is possible on a 1GR, just imagine what would be possible with refined tuning.

That doesn't encompass every Tacoma, obviously. Way to many external accessories which CAN affect drag. But driving technique is as well as common sense vehicle maintenance will greatly improve over the non. Add better tuning to YOUR setup, and bam.

To quote Grumpy (owner of Xrunner of ~ 140k miles) "My $.02, those who say it couldn't be done....what they meant was they couldn't do it."

That shows nothing. I can get that in my Tacoma all day if I drive like a grandma.

I average 22MPG highway driving normal, and on your best picture of 471 / 20 gallon tank is like 23MPG. And
that's assuming you didn't fill it up to the neck. I bet you can fit like another half gallon atleast by topping it off.

So tell me what are you tuning when you are driving down the highway at 60 that thinks you will get up to 30MPG?

The system is in closed loop running of the sensors when you are at a steady speed like on the highway. It is already adjusting the AFRs.

So where you going to get your 30MPG from? If you really think you can get 600 miles to the tank by somehow adjusting the closed loop system, show us.

30MPG real world is impossible and not going to happen unless you're drafting a semi going down a long hill or something along those lines. And like I said, I got no problem being wrong.
    I'll gladly be proved wrong.

I challenge you to do it then. See if you can do better.

Simple. Most drivers here are getting between 15-18 mpg. Let's assume that BD can increase the mpg by ~ 35%. And for the sake of this post that the average driver is getting 17mpg. A 35% increase in MPG, with tuning, would make for just about 23 MPG.

But if you are the type of driver that can regularly get 23mpg, then that 35% increase in mpg would equate to 31mpg.

There are a lot of variable, most importantly being driving technique. Can BD do it with there tuning changes alone? I don't know. Can it be done with additions to tuning such as: increases in intake/exhaust
flow, better injectors, and increased fuel pressure? Yes.

And don't forget, it isn't just in closed loop all of the time. Load characteristics will make it change to Open Loop at a point that isn't always the same. If your truck weighs more then the engine will see a higher load sooner than a lighter truck. Which means going into the super rich open loop tune, made by Toyota. Which means worse mpg.

It isn't a pipe dream. It is juat something that needs to be tackled. The only limiting factor here, is one's self.

Someone driving on flat ground with a super light foot will see very little gain in mpg, since they are most likely in closed loop much of the time they are driving. Folks with heavier foots, and hilly areas will see the most gain, since they will be in open loop much more often, which is the only place the tune can make improvements for using less gas.

But like Torspd said, most would be surprised at how much time the 4.0 spends in open loop. It ain't only at WOT. It's just about every time you hit a hill, or accelerate slightly more aggressively.

I have just done over 3k highway in my 4.0 13 Baja, all stock and the am averaging 16.3mpg with the best of 17.2mpg. The route New Orleans to Lafayette, IN and back again twice, with a trip to western PA and back from Lafayette, IN. I run on cruise with it set to 75... would love to see something that improves this up to what the sticker said and the power to would be nice:D
In my last few vehicles I managed to get better than what the sticker said.

If you can handle the slower speeds, doing 65 mph would net you a good deal more mpg.
