Anyone else take note of the question about the pulley? I mean since the pulley change is so common is there going to be a map tune for each of the 4-5 sizes? I want to buy this tuner and upgrade later to a different pulley and a few other things, but I want it to be safely done. Yes the dyno video shows the upgraded pulley, but it makes me wonder about the reliability of the entire system. Did they get the tunes based on tacomas with stock or modded pulleys? I want to be excited and I want to purchase this item, but I also want to be skeptical to be on the safe side.

If it was to "crap out" while installing,(which I'm assuming you mean throw a code, not make it through, freeze up, battery die, etc.) as long as you don't turn they key there is an easy recovery. We have all the stock files preloaded into the unit for situations like this. But, if you turn the key when it says on the screen "DO NOT TURN KEY" then there isn't anything we can do.

But we seriously recommend putting a battery charger on your truck for the install.

So the turning of the key acts like the "Commit" button. That's better than no option. I get the battery charger thing - but reality is that maybe 1% of users will do that.

Bottom line is this:

Can the BD Tuner do all (or most) of the little convenience items for our trucks or not?

This is a major selling point for me because the BD Tuner acts like a TechStream and a Tuner.. Otherwise, its just a ECU tuner and to be honest, Id rather get a MAF Calibrator w/MAP from Gadget for a 1/3 of the money..

I've been one of the biggest proponents of "help me justify this thing" for the last couple of weeks. A couple things to keep in mind.

o I'm not sure if BD will ever be able to do the entire feature list quoted on a Tacoma. If it's not available to modify via Techstream, hard to believe that BD found these keys. Me thinks more marketting/new product pains.

o What they do have going for them though is on-line free code updates. Don't discount this, especially given that this is a brand new product. I have had two "new" tuners for other vehicles from other vendors that plain did not work out of the box. Both had to go back to get re-flashed then sent back (weeks...). Both did work in the end, but first products from any vendor are prone to growing pains, they will happen here too.

o I have mentioned URDs MAF Cali, as have a couple of others, one thing to keep in mind is that BD _probably_ will not release a tune specific for a particular air intake and/or exhaust combo, as I have not seen that in how they operate, not 'dis'n them, just how they do business. Given that, correcting induced MAF errors ends up staying with URD. To me, it's still not clear how BD and URD would play together if installed at the same time.

The MAF Cal could care less what program is on the ECM. It simply intercepts the MAF signal and changes it on the way to the ECM, adding or removing fuel as necessary. So a BD tuned ECM or stock ECM wouldn't make a difference.

My feeling about that though, is if I'm going to have to have both, I might as well save $650 and just get the MAF Cal - unless I want all the other bells and whistles. I prefer having some control over the tune - while others may prefer not to. All of the data logging features are useless if you can't do anything about them.

I would imagine that the URD MAF Sensor Calibrator could be used well with the BD reflash device.

For example, we would assume that BD developed their calibration file based on an accurate MAF sensor reading. The ECU needs good data so it can do its thing. Now if you install an intake system that induces a significant MAF sensor error the ECU now is working from bad data and you will end up with a less than optimum result like like the stock ECU gets jacked up with bad MAF data coming in.

The second use of the MAF Cal is fuel tuning. This is where you could run into a problem. If the MAF Cal is used to lean down the upper RPM for better power and you load a reflash tune in that does the same thing you can quickly end up to lean.

If you have a MAF Cal installed and properly setup and the alter the ECU calibration you should go back and retune the MAF Cal so everything is working well together. You can still use the MAF Cal to touch up the reflash and to compensate for the subtle variations each and every truck has.

If you have a MAF Cal installed, you will not need to throw it away if you load a new calibration in your ECU. Just reset the table values to all 10s. Load the new calibration and then check and see what if any adjustments are needed to optimize things for YOUR truck just like you did with the stock ECU calibration.

I can't justify spending all that money just to tune the truck, even though that is a pretty spectacular feat in itself...

Bully Dog has stated that if it is an option that the truck is equipped with, then it can be changed via the unit. Not all trucks have all those options.

They want you to call the tech line if you are having issues so they can walk you thru the process as they have explained it is somewhat tricky - 940.783.9915

Its cleaned up and put together dyno, but the numbers are accurate per BD tech.

That is on premium fuel.

Check out the Tundra Dyno showing 93 vs 95 octane. Obviously there is more power to be had on these motors with timing

Try to update your unit. But, we do recommend trying the install during business hours.

1. The Bully Dog should be able to do the full list. When the feature isn't available, the tuner will not display it. I know that sfcadams is having issues, and we would like to work those out as soon as possible. He has pm'ed me and I am talking with the engineers about these issues. Any issues should definitely be reported to Bully Dog by calling 940-783-9914. It might be an easy fix! But if we don't know about these problems, then we can't do anything about them.

2. I warn against any discounts with this product. It is against our pricing rules. If dealers are found giving discounts, they are blacklisted and are no longer allowed to sell.

3. No, we will not be releasing a CAI specific/ exhaust tunes, but the tunes are pretty flexible. We tune for a stock vehicle, but leave a little room for alteration. If we were to lean out the tune to get every ounce of power, we would just be asking for trouble! But, as I said the tunes are designed for a stock vehicle so any modifications should definitely be done with a weary eye.

Sorry about the late reply. I've got night classes and just now got back on here!

Side note for any Tundra TRD watchers: We have released the S/C tune! So don't waste any time and go ahead and pick up your unit. The tune is crazy good, and has been crazy tested.
When tuning the TRD we did discover a few maps/tuning possibilities for the other vehicles, such as the Tacoma, and the Tacoma S/C, so stay tuned for updates on hp/tq gains. It goes without saying that the Tundra S/C has been our main focus for the last while to get it out the door and presentable, but now that it is, we can start allocating more resources toward the Tacoma. We wouldn't ever leave you guys out!

I apologize if I have missed any questions. If I did, feel free to rub them in my face until I answer it.

I did see a few posts about the pulley's, and yes, we did tune with the smaller pulley. But as to the actual affects I will need to talk to an engineer about that. I don't want to tell you that it's completely safe and won't cause alterations to find out that it does.

I am taking those dyno results with a huge grain of salt since obviously the vehicles being tested are NOT stock to begin with, especially as it was seen in their live tests. I want to see real numbers from an unmodified Tacoma 4.0 and 4.0 SC.
