TRD Cold Intake for off highway use only??

I just read about the TRD cold intake which I had installed 5 years ago that it is for off-highway use only- so that has raised some serious questions on whether I made a bad decision getting this? Mechanics is not my thing, so wondering what this mod may being doing to my engine that may not be good since all I do is city driving?

Any thoughts and facts?

 

Shouldn't hurt ur truck at all usually intakes do absolutely nothing but make noise and put some bling under the hood don't sweat on it I have a intake and do mostly city driving as well as do most people on here.

 

Just out of curiosity, where did you read that? If it's the TRD intake, it will be fine for on road use. Many people are running that intake and have been for a long time without any issues. It won't cause any problems with the truck.

 

Welcome to the forum Michelle. Being that you purchased your TRD intake ~5 years ago, then that would be the 1st gen TRD intake. Made by AFe. It is only considered as for "off road vehicles" due to removing the carbon trap from the factory intake. Thus it couldn't get CARB approval (screw those guys anyway).

It is a very good intake and performs very well. Just check the filter and clean it when it is necessary.

 

If you've had it for 5 years with no problems then I wouldn't worry about it. I ran that intake on my 07 for about a year and didn't notice any differences in performance so I yanked it and sold it. But again, if you've been passing inspection these 5 years then I wouldnt worry about it. As someone else said, the reason they put that disclaimer there is because it had no charcoal filter for emissions.

 

This. If you live in Calif, the intake may prevent you from passing inspection (CARB - California Air Resource Board). Outside Calif it isn't a concern.

But, if were actually taking it in dirt I would tell you to go back to stock.

Through my experience through motocross and off roading my current truck. The cotton gauze type filters don't filter dirt as good as foam or even paper. I found dirt covering my MAF sensor and on my mx bike the inside of the carb was coated also.
But, on the street cotton gauze type filters flow way more air compared to those two. ( not as much dirt on asphalt ).

 

That's funny I have run k&n for over35 years on everything from dirt bikes,qauds ,jet skis and my vehicles and never had that problem.I also run a pre filter on it also.

Have you ever wore out a set of rings faster than you thought they should or found dust in the intake or carb?

Just wondering Ive never ran a K&N off road, and everyone has a diffrent opinion on them.

 

I wish there was a pre-filter for my 2nd gen TRD CAI. I dont run pre-filters yet. I'm sure they would help. All my street vehicles get K&N. Dirt get foam.

 

Is there a drop-in foam filter cone that would fit the TRD/AFE intake tube?

Thanks everyone for the info, now I get it. Pugga, you asked where I read it-I saw it in the TRD catalog someone had posted on the forum. It was basically in the fine print of the page. I don't live in CA, so I should be good to go then...thanks again

But, I already had spent a pretty penny for it, now im trying to figure out a solution to keep the dirt out...........

 

An old rally trick - since yours is a flat filter, cover it in panty hose.

Might seem strange, but works.

 

That's not a bad idea.
I bought flat foam filter but couldn't figure how to mount it. Pant house will slide right over and the box will still seal!
