No CAI allowed w/TRD Super Charger

Has anyone else possibly heard that you cannot run a TRD CAI at the same time that you install a TRD SC? I was at the dealership pricing out having the TRD SC installed on my 09. I was planning on adding the TRD CAI and the TRD exhaust at the same time. Service manager took some time and then came back saying he spoke with the TRD group and they recommended that you NOT install the CAI at the same time you have a SC, stating it would run to lean and thus cause overheating. I asked if it could be calibrated to not run lean and was told No. I still plan on adding the SC but I guess I will have to forgo the CAI at this time. Anyone else heard this?

You'll have to invest in some additional gear IIRC. Like the APR X-1 or some other aftermarket set up.

It kind of makes sense, I just never heard of it. The SC will already be leaning the fuel/air ratios. If you add the CAI you just opened it up to breathe more and now are forcing more air into the mixture thus getting even more lean. Im thinkin.

 

I have an '08 with TRD SC, CAI & no overheating problems . Both installed by the dealer without comment or caveat. I believe the combination is illegal in Calif. but that's a long way from Fla.

I had a similiar issue with my lift I ordered. I emailed ProComp and they replied specifying a specific kit number for my truck. I go to my local install shop for them to order it. They call Pro Comp with the part number and they tell him on the phone that they dont sell a 6" lift for my truck. Bad Case of the left hand dont know what the right is doing sometimes.

 

if you want to get the trd supercharger its best to keep your truck stock. but if you want to add aftermarket parts then you should look into getting a piggy back system. if you decide to get the ecu reflash from toyota its best to run it on all stock parts since that's what the program was designed to run on. if you want to run aftermark parts then you shoud look at these units there all from urd.

you would have a better chance to have your truck running perfect with these units instead of having the reflash. the other factor is that once you get the ecu reflash you are stuck with it. so if you decide to sell the trd supercharger, your truck will be stuck with that program. the only way to get around that is to get awhole new ecu for your taco.

i hope this helps your question. i learned alil bit from researching online. i decided to the urd superchager so i wouldn't have to worry about that whole mess.

 

Run the intake and exhaust. It will not harm the s/c at all in fact it will give you more hp. I had a AFR gauge hooked up on my truck at it was 11.5ish with s/c, intake, exhaust, and headers which is fine. Almost every truck with the s/c that I have seen all have the intake, and full exhaust setup.

Oh and some trucks run super rich in the 10's and some are perfectly fine, so no need to worry. Any add on will only help in the performance.

 

Not sure how many members have the s/c installed, but here's my truck.

I've had the s/c for almost a year and a half (installed myself), and absolutely love it! Haven't had a single problem. Truck makes 296hp and 303tq at the wheels. Truck has intake, headers, and exhaust.

 

No it's true.
The SC warranty paperwork says any CAI (even their own)or headers use voids the SC warranty.
I don't know why but it's in print and I was told the same thing when I called TRD.Even the dealer who installed the SC wouldn't install it even if I still wanted the TRD CAI.
Some here have one installed without any problems.
I opted to stay with just the SC and TRD exhaust.The truck is quick enough.No need for me to take a chance for maybe another 10 or so HP.

My truck is at the dealer now with a SC problem of some sort.

 

Thx for the input Joe. the saga continues. It makes no sense why TRD states it should not be done yet it is obvious that others have it working without any issues. If if does kill the warranty then I cannot justify adding the CAI at this time. Keep is updated on your truck. I may have a few questions for you as I progress towards this purchase.

 

TRD is protecting them selves. Lots of things can be used outside their intended purposes safely and without issues- but if damage might occur they just tell you not to do it and they are safe.

 

Ask away,if need be.
You can always take the CAI off when going to the dealer,though.
