4 runner vs tacoma

Why does the 4 runner have more horsepower than the taco?
Both have same engine 4.0. For the v6 anyway.

 

Different engines. Tacoma has the 4.0 VVT-i and the 4runner gets the 4.0 with dual VVT-i.

 

Not only does it have more HP.... Its weaker internally too.

 

On my sales slip it says dohc is that not the same?

 

The 4 runner can vary the cam timing on both intake and exhaust I believe, the tacoma can only vary the intake timing.

 

This applies only to the newer 4Runner and FJ. The previous generation had the same 1GR across all three platforms.

The '03-'04 model 4Runner, has a different VVT-I intake pickup for the cam phase sensor.

The 4Runner is heavier at 4800 lb curb weight vs 4100-4200 lb for the Tacoma, so the 4Runner gets the costlier dual-VVTi version to maintain an acceptable performance level.

Beyond variable cam sprockets, the dual-VVTi version has more complicated (and quieter) hydraulic roller rocker valve lifters in lieu of solid bucket lifters on the single-VVTi engine.

 

Ok, but maybe that's what needs to come. A lot of people complain that the taconeeds a bit more power. Although I'm happy, more is better in this instance.

 

The 3rd gen Taco is expected to get the former RAV4's 3.5L 2GR-FE engine, good for at least 276 hp.

(The prev-gen RAV4 as you can expect was quite quick in a straight line.)

 

If so is the engine dual vvti?

 

Toyota's. The dual vvti 1gr has 5 balance weights instead of 9 for weight reduction in order to get better mpg. Also is weaker as it implements a 20wt oil fill from factory. The pistons have a cast holes on the bottom of the piston head near the pin bosses, again, to reduce weight. The engine does have some cool stuff on it to make it somewhat of an upgrade. Bigger throttle body, direct injection, chrome plating on the compression ring to be compatible with the planned 20% ethanol mixture, windage tray.

your right I looked on my pdf and the injector was moved closer to the intake valve. thats what I get for going off memory alone.
