I just bought the TRD 16'' wheels for my 2012 and im going to be putting tires on soon but have no purchased them. The rims havent even shipped yet!

Im looking to to see what i could do to improve braking power? The TRD BBK kit is super expensive, and now states a min-17'' rim is required?! Not sure if it even fit the 2nd gen.

Next, the tundra brake upgrade seems to only work for 1st gen tacomas.

Im starting to wonder if i should return my 16'' rims for 17'' or if maybe just pads/rotor upgrade is enough?

A pad and rotor upgrade with steel braided lines will make a pretty good improvement. That's what I did and I could tell the difference right away.

Few good comments about EBC stage kit. The stage 5 seems to be the most appreciated. Abit more expensive but way cheaper then the big brake kit you're talking about.

Yours already has the 4 piston front brakes. So like Glueman stated. That would be simplest way.

The TRD BBK is very nice. You will have to upgrade the wheels though. It will come with stainless lines as well.

Just make sure to use a good quality DOT 4, as it will have a higher boiling point than DOT 3's. Which Wil help you if you have any extended braking periods.

Motul 660 is a very good one. As well as the Castrol. Just can't remember the Castrol's specific name.

Definitely. For most people that upgrade is more than sufficient. Luckily our trucks already came with 4 piston calipers, unlike the X-Runner (a "sports" truck) which only has 1 piston calipers. For them, the BBK is a worthy/necessary upgrade.

Now if only our trucks came with rear disk brakes, like the 4Runner, then we'd have a nice setup. Heck, with half the mods people install on their trucks, they out weigh the T4R in no time.

At least they are convertible to ours....

True, but let me elaborate. All rotors can crack depending on the type of usage. Drilled rotors are more prevalent to those cracks, primarily because of the cheap quality ones. They crack sooner under less stressful conditions than top quality drilled rotors. When those cracks reach 3mm's then they need to be replaced. Had a friend get some drilled rotors. They were some black looking color. I cannot remember exactly ehich brand they were. They cracked after only a few months of street driving. Junk.

Unless a buyer is ready to pay good money for drilled rotors, and I know that most arent, it is best to stick with slotted.

Case in point, my drilled Stop Tech rotors cost me ~$740 for the pair. I've raced on them. Multiple times. Not one crack. Yet. In time, they will. Just like any other rotor which sees such extreme heat cycles. Those are as expensive as I want to go, and that isn't even as expensive as they get.

Centric are Chinese. If you get those, get nothing more than their slotted. That's just my opinion though. Lucario Runner has had good fortune with their solid rotors on his 4Runner, which he races as well.

u would do centric slotted over the powerstop blanks for the same money? or u were saying definately dont get centric drilled and if u were going to get centric dont go more than slotted?

That I wouldn't get any drilled rotor unless it is from a well known, reputable company who has been making drilled rotors for high end vehicles.

Powerstop is cheap chinese junk, I have a set on my rav4 and they need to be replaced and look pretty weathered for something that is barley two years old. Power slot, now just called stoptech is much better quality (also chinese but better qc). I have a set on my 4Runner, which see's heavy track use, and my F250 which I use in auto cross as much as possible. I use all three alot so I would also add they are daily drivers. The 4runners brake set up is slotted front rotors (stoptech/power slot) rear centric blanks, TRD pads, stainless steel brake lines, motul 660. I feel very confident with the current set up and would recommend it if going for a big brake kit is outta budget or out the question do to wheel/tire choice.

alright i realize i have gone far from the upgrade premise of the OP, but there seems to be a vast knowlege of brakes that are subscibed to this thread so ill ask again, http://www.am-autoparts.com/Toyota/Tacoma/brake-pad-and-rotor-kits/AM-16908589/555709.html i cant find anything on this brand but it has a 10 year warrenty. im not really looking for an upgrade but obviously if there price was about the same i would go for the better product. im simply looking for replacement options and the best bang for my buck right now. so would this be something that would be worth a shot for under $100

I have had a set of EBC's dimpled and slotted (GD Series) rotors and their 7000 series Greenstuff pads on for a a little over 4 years and other than Bilstein 5100 shocks, that was the best upgrade I have done to my PreRunner. No fade, dust is almost nonexistent, rotors are showing almost no wear. Price for the rotor and pads was not too bad either for the return on investment. Give them a look, try Amazon or Placeforbrakes.com

There is a lot of variety in what makes a braking system "better"
Knowing what your doing with the truck could help the braking experts lead you into the best decision.
IE towing? Mountain driving? Racing? Just want to come to a stop faster?

I think the black rotors you are referring to are the EBC sport rotors, just an FYI for everyone. Sorry if I'm wrong I just happened to notice that.
