free mpg mod... maybe

Items For the past few months ive been getting between 21.3-22.A little (it was my high one time and havent broke 22 in over a month now) at any rate, it has finally cooled off, 40's in the morning low 70's for hi. Ive decided to disconnect my intake hose from the housing and run a hot air intake to see if mpg will go up. I imediately noticed ait go from 78° to about 100° via torque. I figure im a good candidate for testing since my consistency has been within .75 mpg per tank and im already sslightly above average, meaning all pros should be at a max with me. Heres a disassembled pic and tonights fill up. Ill change nothing else over the next month or so and post updates every 10 days or so.

I am running 265/75/16 so i add 3.5% to my mileage every tank, but thats a constant also and shouldnt skew the results. This is the lowest mpg since i started my new job on july 31 btw

 

I'll be watching your results with interest as I also run a warm air intake on my 2.7...



I never compared the mileage with the stock cold air intake as I did other mods concurrently.

it was about 45* or so this morning on my way to work. i noticed very little change for the first 4 miles or so until my engine warmed up. the first time i stoped after have a warm engine i went from ait of 48 ish to 60*. i also noticed that above 50mph temps would dip back down below 60, but i managed in the 70's most of the trip. when i pull into work i was at 87*. 40* above ambient this should be enough to make some kind of difference hopefully.

 

Interested for outcomes.

 

I did this with my 4.0L in the winter too, although I just removed the tube. It's only two bolts. I also blocked off most of the grill to keep it warmer in there. It typically stayed ambient plus forty or so when moving.

That motor gets so thirsty with cold air. In the deep of winter it was worth about 4 mpg, but even in the fall it still helped. It seemed that once the temps got above 60 or so there was no change in the mileage vs with the tube back on so I always reinstalled it for summer.

Had to run premium gas though. It wasn't uncommon to see IAT north of 120F in town and it would ping on regular fuel.

 

Well this tank is shot. I was on par to see a 1-2 mpg increase based on gauge but then this 6000# plus happened had to haul 4000# of wheat sead and some pallet Forks for my dad on this trailer. Total trip was about 60 miles 25 or so loaded and the rest and empty heavy trailer. I reattached the tube cuz i figured i would need all the hp i could muster and managed this at 65-70 flat ground, not so good on hills ha

 

well i went 327 on a touch over 16 gal on this tank. with 60 miles or so pulling that trailer and managed just over 20 mpg, so clean slate now, 10 more days or so for new numbers

 

Does alabama go to winter fuel?

 

i dont think so, ive never noticed a huge drop like is talked about on here. just about everything here is e10 and thats all i use since the places u can find 100% is usually 60-70 cents higher, but i dont think we get different blends for the winter. its very rare that we get days in winter that dont atleast get to freezing for the high. definately no more than a couple days that stay that cold, and our lowest lows are usually in the teens, again thats during a cold front that last a few days at most

 

coming from the wrx community i'm used to everybody wanting the intake air to be as cold as possible for the turbo. What about hot air makes the taco run more efficiently? just that it's closer to combustion temperature so everything ignites easier?

 

warmer air is less dense, and when warmer air is read as AIT, less fuel is injected b/c the ecu tries to maintain a 14.7:1 AFR. its not that its more efficient, but if your not pulling or hauling or racing u usually dont neeed all of your HP, so a sacrifice of a few ponies that i rarely use anyway is not much a price to pay if i can keep getting almost 22mpg or better through out the winter imho.

Why would you waste gas hauling Pioneer seed

 

thats what my dad ordered i recon, i used to work with a guy (who had absolutely zero experience with anything farm related) that like a hat i had that was pioneer (my dad use to work at southern states, kinda like a co-op, and they would get free hats all the time) anyway, the guy i worked with kept asking me for a hat like that, and my dad said they were out so i told him and then asked why he wanted it so bad and he said, "cuz it looks like a dick."
He's an odd fella and i spent a good deal of my growing up, playing basketball either on his team or against him and spent way more time with him than i should have i guess, but i still cant help but think of that when i see pioneer. The funny thing is, is that it doesnt really look falicious at all.

Pioneer is a company I've had both good and bad experiences with. There genetics are a bit behind up here so they commonly try to sell based on the fact that they use a local farmer as there company representative, it's there company philosophy. Only thing is that they don't support anything else local and that grower spends way more time selling for himself than actually farming, so it's a mute point lol.

As for your cheap WAI, I'm curious to see if you have a mileage increase. I would think that with my supercharger on my 2nd generation that I'd get pinging if it worked or my inter cooler would eliminate any temperature gains that I'd get. A lot of people with "short ram intakes" see gains in sound they assume mean gains in mpg, power, etc. I'd be curious to see if this leads to the same sort of "gains".

 

Is that a scan gauge picture or maybe an ultra gauge? I've been looking at them, what do you have?

 

I like your ingenuity...,,but for a 1 mpg increase.....not worth the time and effort to see such a little gain IMHO....

Considering a lot of members indicate the 4 litre runs rich , I dont see why the warm air intake shouldnt help fuel economy . Coming from 40 - 50 below zero winters where I live, this may help . I go through a tank of premium fuel every 150 miles during the 10 winter months we have up here.
