Has Toyota confirmed they are going to put a Cummins in a Tundra? And it won't be some coal rollin 24V either, it will be similar to the V6 that is in the current 2500 trucks.

The reason Toyota has not put their Hino diesel in their trucks is because of the recession. They were doing some R&D in 2008 when the economy tanked, and they shelved the project. Now, they are supposed to drop a Cummins in. If the Cummins does well in the market then Toyota will start working on putting a Hino in the US model trucks.

Mercedes, BMW and Audi/Volkswagen all have diesels as options in their US vehicles that are powerful, fuel efficient, reliable, and meet emissions requirements - even CARB. I've driven my friend's CA compliant 2013 X5 with the 3.0 turbodiesel: 254hp @ 4000 rpm, 413 lb·ft @ 1500 rpm, and we got 28 mpg on the freeway, hauling ass at 80 mph with three guys and lots of bikes and gear. And that's the single turbo model. Don't tell me Toyota can't figure out how to make its diesels emissions compliant. The 1VD-FTV used in the Land Cruiser is very powerful with a twin turbo: 261 hp @ 3400 rpm, 479 lb·ft @ 1600-2600 rpm, 22.8 mpg combined (in a heavy vehicle).

RENAULT’S radical new Formula 1 turbo technology developed for the 2014 season will, over the coming years, improve the range and driveability of its road cars too.

Formula One racing’s 2014 engine regulations are already having a positive impact on the development of new road car technologies. That is according to Mercedes and Renault, suppliers of power units to eight of the 11 current F1 teams.

“One of the major reasons for our decision was the new regulations introduced this year and that the various green technologies in the new Formula One power unit, as well as the total energy management, are both very challenging and significant,” said Honda’s Yasuhisa Arai.

“The new regulation encourages each power unit supplier to pursue the ultimate combustions efficiency and high pressure direct injections, such as many, many new technologies. Thus the challenge is to convert each unit of gasoline into energy and this is expected to be reflected on the huge production mode.”

    http://www.formula1.com/news/headlines/2014/4/15741.html

“We are often asked the question of whether there is actually any technology transfer between race and road car engineering. The answer is resoundingly ‘yes’ – but it’s a more subtle process than bolting bits from one car onto another”, says Paddy Lowe, Executive Director (Technical) at MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS. “There are examples of direct transfer – for instance the NANOSLIDE technology used to coat cylinder bore surfaces. And then there is indirect transfer, where F1 serves as a research laboratory for developing new solutions and showing the world what is possible.”

Mercedes have developed a unique arrangement of the exhaust gas-powered and electric-assisted turbocharger on their car’s power unit. Thanks to all these extreme technologies, Mercedes now has the upper hand over the rival F1 engine manufacturers, Ferrari and Renault. And now Mercedes-Benz plans to shift their Formula One technical knowhow to their road legal cars, it is only a matter of time before these high-tech engineering benefits efficiency for the consumer market.

So back to the diesels. I stopped by the Nissan dealer today and the sales team got word the new cummins diesel would be out in spring , only in the 2wheel desert runner limited number to test the market. I was talking to a sales guy so don't set the stones just yet.

I think the reason for the cummins motor is they worked with the EPA to develop the diesel.
