Supercharger on V6 2012

I know there has been posts about superchargers on here but can never find them when I need it.
I have a 2012 Prerunner V6 that I am thinking about having a supercharger installed. Its cheaper than buying a Tundra for the few times a year I tow. Question is? How much have you payed for the Supercharger and what has your dealer charged to install it.
I just stopped at a local dealer and they want $1080.00 for the install and $4600.00 plus tax for the parts. Have any of you actually had one installed to use it for towing?

 

Many see that as a benefit to towing with more power. Waiting to put a few more miles on the clock before I do the same.
The price is well within the range. I do believe it is a 10 hour book time. If you are not inclined, it is worth the dealer install so that they can cover install warranty.
Just be sure and stay within the towing weight and it will serve a promising purpose.

My deal right now (two weeks out) is $960 install and $4200 for the parts.

I'll use it for the rare towing but I want it for the POWA!!

 

Please post a pic of the full receipt so some of us can use it as a bargaining chip. I'm looking at sometime in December.

some dealers only charge 8hrs even tho it may take 2 days..........thats how I got lucky

 

I had mine purchased and installed for $5,200. And like the other people here say it may take them two days, as it did mine. As for towing, this may or may not be the best route. I tow with mine more than I had planned. I bought the supercharger for plain performance and the bought a boat a few months later. When I drive like normal I average about 18.5 mpg, but when I tow my boat anywhere (21' Trophy w/150hp Evinrude) I average about 8.5-9mpg. Even with the extra power the engine makes it still doesn't like towing it. Its a toss up really.

 

Aside from the mpg when towing, do you feel that the SC is beneficial when towing at higher elevation or up steep grades?

 

I do find it beneficial at lower speeds and when the outside temps are cooler, but once on the highway at anything above 55 she struggles. when I tow between 60-70 its always hunting gears and even up very slight grades I still need like 4-5k rpm to maintain speed. A manual would do a little better as its lower geared and wont be jumping back and forth. But other than that the supercharger everyday is what I love. As far as towing is concerned its a toss up.

I have tried both. If you leave it in 5th it will only upshift to 5th on a down hill at above 65. If I leave it in 4th it does hunt a lot less but it will still down shift to 3rd up slight grades. And I am also at sea level. A lot of my problem tho is my boat is a giant air anchor and it also only has a single axle trailer. But still.....I have towed a couple other things and it's kinda similar. Expect 8-10 mpg when pulling something.

 

Thanks. I've ordered a fiberglass travel trailer that will weight about 3800 lbs (4500 lbs GVWR) and am concerned how the Taco will handle the weight towing out west. Just wondering if the SC was the answer. Really don't want to have to go to a Tundra.

 

I have a S/C and I tow a 21 foot Jayco Swift TT which weighs just under 5000 lbs wet and loaded. The supercharger does help with power. I can pass with the trailer if I need to on undivided hiways, which was out of the question without the S/C. You MUST leave the truck in 4, and not drive, if you want to have any lifespan on your transmission. I have a Scangauge and the transmission temperatures spike well past 240 if you leave the truck in D. IMHO that's going to damage the fluid awfully fast.

That being said, as an earlier poster mentioned, I get something like 8-9 mpg most times towing with the S/C. Considering it takes premium it really can put a damper on long trips when you consider the gas bill. Nothing that I've found will turn the Tacoma into a great towing vehicle for heavier loads.

 

Picture the TRD SC on the Tundra. 500+ hp But.... I hear it has transmission issues when the blower is installed

I'm thinking about doing the install myself as well. What did you do for the reflash?

 

He took it to the dealer. Only place you can get a reflash. $110.
