I just ordered mine. This is the best design intake I have seen from my research for the Tacoma's.

They all work the same but this is the most closed and offers the scoop option

Beware of your engine check light. My buddy got the volant on his tundra. 2 days later, engine check light. I always liked the volant myself. He took his back to the shop that installed it and they put a different brand intake. Gave his truck way more power. I'm not sure what the issue was with the checklight, or if it was an install issue. Since his experience the volant is not at the top of my list . Just my 2 cents

I don't have the intake yet and we will see what happens once I get it. If it gives me issues then I will return it ASAP.

Did your buddy go with AFE?

I hate that their boxes are made out of metal but I guess they offer a few out of plastic now.

Yeah, the idea of a metal box doesnt sound "cool", but my buddy has way more power with the AFE than he had with the volant. Neither one of us is sure whether or not it was an install issue, or a parts issue. The mechanic will always say that its the parts.

Who claims more HP? Volant or AFE? Volant offers that cold Air scope to get more cold Air into the box.

Also AFE is like 450 for a intake. WTF.

Plastic is more expensive than steel and the Volant is cheaper and made out of plastic.

I canceled my volant order and am going with AFE. Volant never got back to me by email but they did call me about something I did not email. Anyway from what I have found out the AFE is the better system. As long as the box is not metal again like the one on my M3 I will be happy with AFE. If it is metal I am going to be like great heat soak issues again...

Installed the AFE last night. I get a lot better response when I hit the gas.

I'm thinking the AFE #51-11352 dry filter model. A tech from AFE said that the tube and box are both composite. I called a mailorder shop and they opened a box and said the box was still metal. Just wondering which one you installed and material it is made of. I pick up the 08 Tuesday so just tossing over some ideas for now. Thanks.

The AFE intake is the same as the TRD intake. Just says AFE on the top. I went with AFE as they offer a better design tan Volant and the airbox to throttle body tube "in theory" causes the air to accelerate into the motor.

The entire box is made out of plastic along with the intake tube. The only metal part is the filter cover which is actually aluminum.

The only metal intake I know AFE makes it seems are for cars and a few trucks. I know as my 02 M3 has one and it is the biggest peice of #$% as it heat soaks fast.

I have a 08 with the AFE and 6000 miles now and 5800 have been with the intake. No issues other than a little vibration at WOT.

I was asking about the#51-11352 for about $240 and I think you are talking about the #51-81162 for about $350 which is the completely enclosed box right. Thanks as I'm still tossing it over.

Ah yes, the 51-11352 is there metal stamped line. POS for 2 reasons.

1. The metal heat soaks killing performance.
2. The intake is breathing in the engine bay air which is also heated again killing performance.

I would recommend the enclosed air box or a replacement filte with the 2nd air filter delete.

Just my 2c

Just wondered if you drove much stock or put on the CAI right away? You think you got the 13hp and 21tq they advertise? I can get the oil free AFE stock replacement for $44 and would probably gain only 4 to 5 hp with the secondary filter removed don't you think? Thanks for the input. Still thinking about it.

Never dynoed so I can not confirm. Sorry.

And I never leave anything stock. The stock intake is crazy design and is heavy.

Yes, it will get hotter quicker than a plastic box but, it will cool down faster too. The outside air you are sucking (if you have it up to the hole in your fender or in the front grill, which you should so it can take outside air) will determine the temp of your box. Remember none of the boxes are insulated. If its summer and you sitting in traffic it will not matter much if it’s plastic or metal.
I bought a Volant and was not happy with it so I am going to get a True Flow XDI system.

If the box is plastic it is more likely to keep heat soaking down to a minimum. Also it cools down much faster then metal. No matter what intake you have it will not perform in a hot summer day in traffic. However a isolated / enclosed intake out of plastic will cool down faster and provide better performance than a open filter to the engine bay or a metal box.
