home made CAI is it possible?

i been thinking about getting a URD true cold air intake but its just hit me wouldn't if i put a high flow filter and rerouted the intake from the wheel well to the open air flow of the grill wouldn't it more or less do the same thing but cheaper. i know it wont look as nice but i would love to do a CAI and as a college student money's not really rolling in. lol. so anyone think i would see any benefits from this?

if this was a stupid question just bare with me im just bouncing an idea around here

 

DONT TAKE MY OPINION AS FACT, I MAY VERY WELL BE WRONG, but I think alot more technology goes into a CAI than we think it does. Angles, textures, materials, temperature, MAF sensor placement, etc. So I dont think itd work.

 

hey you can't be wrong i was looking for opinions. now i dont doubt that if i do this that it will fall short of the true benefits of a CAI like URD. Im more wonder if i will see improvements over stock based on true cold air concept.

 

Plus i just randomly thought of the idea when i was make a food run like 2 hrs ago so i havn't even looked at the factory intake to see if i could pull the tube off before the factory filter location with out destroying the factory set up i will have to see what i have to work with tomorrow

 

I just saw you have a 2nd gen. The 2nd gen has an excellent air box. The placement is awesome as it truly draws cold air unlike many others. You should focusing on removing any air flow obstacles like the secondary filter and putting a high flow filter in place of the standard filter.

 

the Tacoma's already have a CAI from factory. The TRD CAI takes away the ribbed and curved piping to make it more direct, but still uses the same concept as the stock AF does.

 

i know the factory intake is a cold air. but my thought was to run a nice big tube to the grill so it could work like a ram air and force the cold straight to the filter instead of sucking it through the wheel well

 

well you will need a vent and a few high flow filters

 

Depending on your uses/activity that may work. I know someone who has something like that, sucked in way too much water and mud, and had to shell out a grip of money for a new engine on a new truck. If your offroad or see mud and rain alot, I say keep the wheel well location.

 

my truck has only ever been down a dirt road so mud isnt a big issue. and i would imagen if you end of the intake at the bottom of the grill the slope up to the intake should be enough to keep most rain water out. but idk i will have to do some serious research and careful planing before i try it deff not risking my engine for a small gain

 

Alot of people on the Impala forums(my previous vehicle) have made their own. Definitely doable. That being said, the homemade ones typically don't look as good. If it was me I would just buy one from a manufacturer rather than make my own.

Yup, tis true.

 

empire performance and offroad did it with basic stuff from hopme depot. cost them 10-15 bucks with gains of 5-10hp.

for the life of me i cant find their damn website anymore

 

how is cutting a hole in your stock box specific to a certain gen

here my 2 gen, i can also but a hole in plastic!!

 

you can turn this into a cai if you want by simply running duct from the hole to somewhere in the front, mount it and put some sort of collector on it to catch the air. easy as pie

this is exactly what i was talking about only difference is i have a V6 so smaller box on the wheel well to add the tubing to.

if the number they gave are true, to hell with 300 cai try it out got the 15 bucks and be done with it

ok so after looking at the site i think i came up with an idea that will hopefully make a home made intake less likely to suck in a bunch of water.

so everything the same as the site says but cut the hose at the the passenger headlight right here.


and leave the end of the hose at the edge of the grill behind the passenger headlight open end facing the driver side. basically perpendicular to the air flow hopefully letting it suck in plenty of cold air and minimal water.


my other thought was to drill a handful of small hole in the bottom of the hose so water and can drain before getting to the factory box on the wheel well
