What octane are you running??

Just curious on what octane gas you all are running in your yota and why?Do you feel a difference with higher octane?better gas mpg?I'm personally running 91(highest in cali) just like to treat my taco right!!what about you?

I run 87 oct. consistently--Any time I've run higher, it loses mpg's. I know, sounds backwards, but it's fact for me. Many folks have reported the opposite results though.

I run 87. I've tried maybe a tank or two each of 89 and 91, but noticed no difference. My truck likes the 87 and I'm very happy with the gas mileage I get out of it. Also, the manual says to use 87, so that counts for something...

My truck is designed for 87 so I run 87. Any more and it's a waste unless you have a blower or run nitrous. No difference will be felt using higher octane fuel.

87. The trucks are tuned to running 87 the most efficiently. When I put 91 in, it feels no different. Unless you run racefuel... 97 octane and higher, your increased performance is negligible, anything otherwise is pseudo feeling.

91 in the M3. It is tuned to run 91. When I put 87, it feels like crap and pings.

Also, there's a crapload of threads on this same topic. OP (original poster) do a search... what's been said here has been said over a dozen times.

Sport Compact car did a test on this back in 2000ish. Bone stock Honda Accord V6 only requires 87 octane. On the dyno the car lost about 12 horsepower when they ran 91 through it.

Just been using "QuikStop" cause it's closest. The thing that has made the biggest difference in getting good mpg's is always using the same station and pump (if possible) each time I fill up. I used to believe pretty heavily in Valero, but ever since I switched to the cheaper (QuikStop) station, I've been doing better. I really don't think there is that big of a difference between gas stations. Although, I've had the absolute worst results with Chevron gas! I think it might be the techron crap they use.

I run the middle grade (89 octane)

I only use the shell nitrogen gas and the chevron techron gas.
I stay away from 76 and Am/Pm

Have you reset the ECU after switching fuel grades (disconnect battery)? Do that, and I bet you see a difference.

Not true. Our motors have a high CR from the factory (10:1). Higher octane will reduce knock, and allow for more performance.

Our ECUs are a learning ECU, with a knock feedback system. The knock feedback system is designed to always test the knock threshold to learn the boundaries for spark advance.

Meaning when you run a higher grade octane, reset the battery and force the ECU to 'relearn' the tune, it will test for higher octane and add more timing. That extra timing = more power.

Going from 87 octane to 93, will be the same as someone going from 93 octane to race fuel status (99 oct). Per octane point increase you can usually add .5-1.5 of timing depending on fuel quality. Every degree of advance can net you up to 4hp (as long as knock is suppressed) If you add 6 of advance (for 6pt of octane increase), you can add up to ~24hp (supposing the ECU auto-advances 6).

Read my previous entry. The trucks are capable of running 87 octane without any problem, it does that by pulling timing. But like I said, our ECUs are self aware, and use a reactive tuning method to check knock thresholds to keep the motor safe.

Unfortunately you can't really use that in reference to our vehicles. Different ECUs altogether, won't respond in the same way.

If you are looking for the extra performance, use 91 and reset the ECU, let it learn the new gas. Looking to stay on a budget, nothing wrong with 87.
