Hi guys, I was looking to buy a locker for my 2009 4cyl 5spd and i am kinda confused about how they lock, like does it lock when i put it in 4 wheel drive, or does it lock some other way thanks?? (for example say it was a detroit true trac)

detroit is an auto locker so its not selectable. i think they use pos and neg loads to lock the gears up. by far the best lockers are arb which are selectable and use compressed air to lock. downside is they are very pricey

Sorry for the idiotness but not selectable means that it is always locked?

Ox locker is actuated by a lever... but i dk if they have one to fit a tacoma? you could always swap out you're rear end for one with an E-locker. Why dont you want OBA?

It will always be active whether in 2 or 4.

A Detroit locker stays locked until you turn. It will stay 'unlocked' when making a turn on the street for example and the outside wheel needs to rotate more than the inside wheel during normal driving.

The bad thing about a Detroit is that it will lock based on the tension from the wheel basically staying locked. This can be bad! If you are driving on snowy highway and the tension eases up from a tire slipping the locker will engage and will spin you out of control in an instant. I imagine it might also wreak havoc on the VSC system but just a guess.

The Detroit lockers are awesome and work great, but they are not ideal for daily drivers IMO. Off road use only.

Go ARB, or look into an Electric Locker off totalled TRD OR (inferior but works fine for me)

There is always the 'ghetto locker' in a pinch: press on the brakes and press on the gas!

That only works if you have a limited slip diff though. So if you have a TRD Sport go for it!

I used to do it an an open (normal) diff on an old jeep before i ARB'd it, it's kind of hit or miss if it will help and should only be used as a last resort.

I also used to jam large sticks through the spinning wheel (not while it was spinning) and lodge the it to the leaf springs basically, then the wheel I wanted to spin would work... until the stick broke.....

Yes, I am the reason people at OSHA can't sleep at night... but I'm getting better.

Guys. He can do the yellow wire mod. You can trick your trucks skid control ECU into enabling TRAC while in 4x4 Lo.

Yoytoda, has done amazing things with his truck.

Yellow wire mod for 09-10 non-ATRAC Tacomas.
