Pre-Runners have the same rearend gearing as the 4x4s which is 4.10. Base model trucks have 3.63, IIRC, which would give you better gas mileage. For more torque, you need to go in the other direction. However, you will have a lower top speed and worse gas mileage because you have to turn a higher RPM.

Actually the pre runners have a 3.73 gear ratio. Called toyota and they confirmed this. (give them you VIN #). I have a 6 inch lift w/ 305/65/17 and just installed 4.11's. I don't know if this is going to help much w/ my mpg yet but have noticed a huge diffrence with the performance. The take off as well as the hwy driving is much better.
Hope this helps!!!!! |

Guess I should have been more specific.
2.7L Base 5spd = 3.31 2.7L Base Auto = 3.58 2.7L 4x4/Pre-Runner 5spd = 4.10 4.0L 4x4/Pre-Runner 6spd = 3.73 4.0L 4x4/Pre-Runner Auto = 3.73 4.0L X-Runner = 3.15 Either way, it's listed on the Toyota website. Goto http://www.toyota.com/tacoma/specs.html and pick your exact model.

Does the towing package affect the gear ratio?

Assuming my math is right, you would have to spin the engine 10% faster to cruise at the same speed. Say you usually cruise at 2500 on the freeway. Now you will be turning 2750 going the same speed as before. What that works out to in MPG is difficult to say without knowing other things. You could just generalize and assume that you'll loose 10% of what you're getting now.
