Hey guys I've got a 1998 Tacoma with a 2.7L and 31x10.50s. I only get about 18.5 mpg on the highway as well as in town. What is everyone else doing differently? Do I need a gear change? What are some mods that you guys tried that work? I love this engine as it's surprisingly spunky, I just would love it more with a little better mileage. Any help would be great.

no problem bro, it's a lose lose situation, especially with 31's and having brick like aerodynamics. You can also switch to cheap beer to save money to fill your rig up!! Thats what I had to do before i left for Korea !!

Also because your tires are taller and wider than stock, what are you running the pressures at? If the max pressure on the tire sidewall is 35, I'd run them at 33...you know, close to max. It will improve your mileage a bit. I've run mine at 32 (35 psi max on tire) these are stock size-not only do I get 19-20 MPG freeway, but these tires are still pretty new looking after 47000 miles. Another thing you can do is get a bed cover like a tonneau (not too much weight added) for aerodynamics. You have no idea being in the cab how much wind and crosswind your truck is fighting. And yup you've got a great hard-working motor in that 2.7!

Thanks. I know that you could get this size from the factory as an upgrade and I figure they'd do a gear change if that were the case. I kinda think that mine tire size was changed after-market so I don't think a gear change was done. I'll check my tire pressure though. Thanks alot.

So I looked at my tires and the max psi is 50, so I put in 45 instead of the 35 psi that the tire shop puts in, and now I get 20 mpg instead of the 18 that I'm used to getting. It only leaves about a half inch of the edges of my tires off of the road. I'm going to keep an eye on the wear pattern.
