Turbo vs Supercharger

okay guys, got a question. im thinking about possibly running a turbo or S/C setup in the tacoma. now my question is i dont know which one to get. a turbo, or a S/C. i heard that S/C units were more for bigger engined cars. and that turbos were for smaller sized engines. any suggestions??

I vote supercharger.

Super Charge it.:burnrubber:All day long.:D

I orginally voted for SC, but didn't realize that you have a 4-cylinder. I really don't know much as most, but wouldn't the market dictate what would be the better option. Subarus, Audis/VWs, Mazadas, Mitishibis, ect. all have turbos on them instead of superchargers. It's not like they spare any expense w/ the STI and Evo! Maybe it's different for trucks since more torque is needed. TRD offers a SC for the TC, so that contradicts what I said above.

I'm not an mechinical engineer, nor due it pretend to be.

I would say your goals would dictate the tool to use. My 2.0L scion has a S/C kit for it that is very popular.

I vote an S/C all day long.

it will come down to where you want the power to be. If you looking for low end towing power a S/C is the winner hands down.. turbo will not come close. If your looking to run pace with corvettes and similar, then a turbo will give you the hp #'s that a s/c won't be able to do.

With a Turbo you can run higher PSI and in turn get out more power. Though you will start to have turbo lag. So the power wont cut in untill around 3000 rpm. With a SC its lower PSI so not as much power but its all through the rpm range.

I own a STI so I would say Turbo but its all what your going to use it for.

if i was going to go turbo i'd go with an STS turbocharger

If you can afford the turbo I would definitely recommend it. Supercharger will be a little more reliable and you wont have to use premium all the time unlike with a turbo you do.

You do have to run Preimium all the time with an SC. :)

I love the feel of turbo lag. Its addicting

beastlytaco 11-03-2008 02:56 PM

well, do they make turbo kits for the 4 cyl? i have contacted somebody about the S/C kit. wont be ready for at least two months from now.

You can get soooo much more power out of a turbo, for less! Thats why im going that way

geerts016 11-03-2008 03:19 PM

turbo it. they are way more efficiant and won't rob you of possible horsepower. and in turn won't take away from your fuel economy during daily driving.

Most modern Superchargers are as efficient as turbos, and they also have no affect on fuel economy, when not in boost. Many people think turbos are "free" h.p., BUT, they in fact take h.p. to make them soin. They have parasitic drag as a blockage in the exhaust system, where as a supercharges creats its parasitic drag in its pully. With modern serpantine belts, and low friction gear boxes, useing light weight oil, SC's can have just as much drag on the engine as a turbo, but they will make power throughout the rpm range. :)
Keep in mind, Im not trying to start an argument as to which is better.

Supercharger all the way!!!!! if anyone wants to buy me one feel free:D

dually 11-03-2008 04:22 PM

With a 3k Supercharger, you can probably tune to about... 9psi?? With a turbo and appropriated mods and tuning you can get almost 20psi!!!! Thats over 300hp in the 4cyl!! Its a very easy decision, a very easy one. The turbo will take more dedication and work, buts its definitely worth it!

Where do you come up with 9 psi? The last SC'ed vehicle I built was running 15.5, and putting out 550 to the wheels.
