Muffler question

New Tacoma owner here. I recently bought a 2008 4x4 TRD DblCab and I'm wondering what this is on the muffler. I don't know much about vehicles besides changing my own oil. I'm pretty sure its the reason why the truck sounds louder than normal Tacomas, but is that all it does? Just for looks and sound? Any MPG effects? Any info is appreciated!

crappy autozone resonator tip?

LUSETACO 03-22-2013 02:02 PM

Looks like just a tip welded on there. Have you checked to see if you have an aftermarket muffler? Just a tip won't really make it louder and a resonated tip would quiet the exhaust.

How can i tell if i have an aftermarket muffler?

Look at the actual muffler under the truck, see if there is a name or part number then put it in google.

Well, the stock muffler looks like a 55 gallon drum. :D Look at your muffler and see if you see welds around where the tubing connects. Welcome to TW by the way.

Follow the tail pipe to a big round canister and take a picture and post it here

You have a Flowmaster.

Fightnfire 03-23-2013 09:23 AM

That's what we call a "bro tip" usually if you look carefully you'll also see a green M similar to this somewhere.

MenaTX 03-23-2013 10:04 AM

You're using 'flowmaster' in a generic sense, not necessarily that brand?

Kirk1589 03-23-2013 06:03 PM

Flowmaster is the brand.

The way it sounds doesn't bother me, i don't really care either way. Just wanted some info, but im assuming it wouldn't be cheap to get rid of?

If you like it that's all that matters. A new muffler and installation will run you about $100-$200.
