strange sound from engine

    I have a 98 3.4 v6 4wd tacoma. Tuesday it started making a weird sound coming from the engine. It sounds like its coming from under the timing belt cover. The sound fallows the rpm. Was wondering if its a good time to change the timing belt out, and how hard it is to change the belt out myself?

    The truck has about 317K miles on it and the last time the belt was changed with the water pump around 200K miles. Everything else is all original and has never been touched.

    Also, if the belt snaps while driving, could it mess the engine up?

    Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
    The 3.4L V6 (3vz) is not an interference engine. You won't damage the engine if the timing belt breaks. The change interval is every 90k miles. I would say you are over-due for a change.

    I plan to get a Haynes repair manual for it. I just want to know if anybody has done it before, how hard it is, and if it requires any specialty tools. I want to try to fix it next weekend if it'll hold out till then.
