This morning Rosco asked an interesting question about superchargers but got no answers other than mine. I'd like to ask those of you who have superchargers (from either generation please) are they worth the price, do they have side-effects such as pinging, and anything else you could add?

Yes, there is pinging and lean out associated with the SC. You can get fuel upgrades such as the TRD 7th injector or many have gone the URD route.

Hey Dan yeah I can get that stuff here but Chris 4x4 (whose technical knowledge is second to none here) told me I'd have to do all kinds of stuff to this 3.4 to accomodate a supercharger so I'm over it:) thanks for the input anyway-

Obviously a finished thread- but yeah...+1 to what Chris told you.
I built a 450+ hp truck engine with a ProCharger blower pushing 11psi. I did alot to it to beef it up- but left a few components alone- and that was a big mistake.
One blown engine later I learned my lesson and beefed everything up- It's a big step up to go to a SC

WHat engine did you build up? What did you do wrong? I built a 360 in a Dodge Dakota. Used a Kenne Bell supercharger (18 psi boost) and enough electronic fuel and engine controlls to make the space shuttle envious. We got just over 500 h.p. to the wheels and took it to the track where it ran an uncorrected 12.2. We couldnt get the tires to hook up, and we were running 10.5" Goodyear slicks. That truck was F U N ! Crusin at 35-40 m.p.h. and it would light 'em up!

It's was the 5.2L (320ish I guess) engine in the '99 Dakota- I bought it started by someone else- and that was my main mistake. I took it off him for a good price considering I paid what the truck was worth- never mind the 6K intercooled procharger kit.

    1) I didn't do anything with the transmission- so I was loading the engine hard anytime I got into the boost range and the transmission wasn't gunna keep up for much longer.

    2) I didn't refresh any gaskets- My intake plemun gasket did me in. It was paper in that engine- and the boost shredded it and the vaccum sucked into the oil journals and it eventually clogged my oil sump- 5 mins later the engine was blown. (That was part immaturity on my part- I saw a couple of signs but not all of them...and ignored what I did see cause I didn't see the others.)

    3) I didn't finish the build- I don't remember where I was exacatlly with HP...but 550 was my goal and it was a daily driver. I dropped a corvetter Z06 fuel system into it, Boost Timing Retard module, the ProCharger kit came with a EFI managment module.

    4) My last mistake was- I gave up. I moved from the Northeast where I built the truck to Florida- I should have gotten it tuned down here before I sold it- but I was tired of fixing it and working on it....so I just sold it.

I want to start building my scion tC engine- Try to get to 325 on that....and the truck is going to get some work done too.

TRD tells me that their SC is no problem except for fuel. 91 is fine, but I can`t buy that anymore. Here is what they told me:

    COL. Ness,

Thank you for your interest in TRD. It is our recommendation, that 93 octane fuel be used with the TRD supercharger kit. If you were to use a lower octane fuel, it is our belief that you may not gain the horsepower and torque as advertised.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any other questions.

You shouldnt use anything less than 91 oct. for the supercharger.

Your mpg will most likely go down a smidge- More if you drive harder. It depends on how you manage boost and fuel.
I haven't looked at the TRD kit- but most come with a fuel management module....and that'll control how much fuel you add during the boost phases.

Even if the MPG was the same, it'll cost more to run the SC considering you really do have to run the premium fuels. At another what, 30 cents a gallon, that will add up fast.

You'll love it. I charged mine back in may and it is AWESOME! I'm having an PLX DM-200 with AFR, Boost, and Oil pressure installed next week so I can keep track of those parameters. I haven't gotten headers or exhaust yet, but those are on the list of things to do. It scoots pretty good for a 4X4 truck.
