    Just the first step.
The carrier must be buckled down.

    Next step.
ALL loose object must be within a container and strapped down.

NJ has some weird laws... well actually all states do. NJ just seems stupid. You can't pump your own gas... Pets have to wear seat belts ...

    They don't stay there.

My wife was in a serious accident before I met her when she was with her ex.

They had puppies in the van, and one of the puppies got under the brake pedal... they ended up hitting a tree.

    But it's still nanny bullshit.

There's a huge benefit to securing your dog in the vehicle. If you are ever in an accident, the dog could become a missile-hit you or go through the windshield.

But still, it's going a little too far to be all up in your business.

I think it's more about protecting others. I do agree the law is silly, but as Rich said, accidents happen. Imagine if they had hit a person instead of a tree.

Yep. I think it's stupid to have to legislate common sense. But if the cops don't have a legit reason to stop someone who is trying to drive with a 25 pound mutt in their lap, then we should give them a tool to do that with.

Wouldn't a dog in your lap fall under distracted driving? Kinda like California cell phone laws, just seems redundant. If someone's got a phone plastered to their face and is having trouble keeping it between the lines, then do we really need a special law to bust them with?

exactly, ...it's "feel gooder" legislation that mucks up the code, and strips away liberty and self-determination, ... i.e. the nanny-state commeth, ...rights/liberties are nothing more than cookies to many politicians...

My dogs haven't even worn a lead since they were pups during training, glad they don't have these kinda laws here.

hawaii passed a law similar to this a few weeks ago. There is no reason to have your dog in your lap when driving anyway.

I hate stupid laws too, but people driving with their pet in there lap caused this, just like the people that text and drive ruin it for everyone else with the hands free laws they have now.
