Anyone had a pup that needed a TPLO surgery?

Seems my 4 year old Golden, Bailey, has torn her cruciate ligament in her left rear leg. Just wondering what others have experienced before I subject her to anesthesia and the risks and other possible complications as a result of the surgery.

Our options seem pretty limited as to a repair and leaving it doesn't seem a good option.

A friends 9 yo dog had the surgery and he was good afterwards. Wasn't cheap, but it relieved his pain and gave him his mobility back.

    Hope Bailey recovers quickly.

Thanks Susan. I've been debating if the risk was worth the improvement in her quality of life. However, this weekend she was back to maybe 60% of normal and during her play made her self so sore she wouldn't get up, eat or drink the rest of the day. I pretty much think, considering her age, it needs done. I don't want to lose her if the surgery goes bad but, her quality of life just isn't what it was.

I've met with a few surgens and found a place I'm pretty comfortable with and they use an angithesioligist. So, during surgery, there would be two docs in the room along with the other staff. This particular surgen does 120 TPLOs (in addition to other ortho procedures) a year and claims 98% of his patients return to 98%+ capability after TPLO surgery. He claims her risk is less than 1/2 of 1%.

Thanks for the input...I'll update the page as she progresses through the process. Her surgery is Tuesday, February 24.

Poor pup. Good you found a surgeon you are comfortable with.

Keep us posted. If she's like Max was, she'll be ready to leave her confinement / restriction way before she is supposed to

This is her the day she came home (a week ago). She's pretty much back to normal now (a week & a day after surgery) except for using the leg. We expect full usage around the end of May. The TPLO requires the bone to be cut and relocated and some hardware to be installed. She seems to be doing really well.

Here we are a year later and I think the right knee now needs the TPLO. We will find out this week after she's checked out at the clinic. I am glad now that I did have the left leg done...

I hate needing to have it done (again) man. I thought I had read of other methods to repair a pups knee on TW but, my search has yielded zero.

There are alternatives but it depends on the damage.

Vet can advise. I discussed several but none were really genuine alternatives, just band aids.

It was discussed in the "show your dog" thread, search my posts in there.

TPLO on the other (right) side is scheduled for tomorrow February 03, 2016. The choice to do the work or not isn't as difficult this time but, still concerned.

Our surgery was rescheduled to 2/9/16 (yesterday). We've had her home a few hours and she seems to be doing well....better than last time in fact.

    Here she is...

    Sorry to hear this...

    How old is she?

We did the left knee almost a year ago and was aware that the right knee may need the same/similar operation so I did keep a close eye on it... I guess if one knee is slanted too far it's not unusual for the other to be formed in the same shape.

This time, she seems to be rocovering faster and is more at ease with it overall.

I will say, she recovered from the previous operation very well.

She's 6. We've been trying rest and no running/very little walking for almost a year. She will get somewhat better and then go back to hopping on her other leg. I hope this will fix it. The vet already warned us that lots of dogs will nd up having to get both knees worked on.
