Tilt shift photos are awesome... I can't decide wether to actually buy a tilt shift lens or just keep going the cheap route and editing them after the fact. Does anyone have any thoughts on actually buying a tilt shift lens... is it worth it?

i think it would be fun to have one. i like composing everything in camera, and to not have to do the tilt in post would be a nice.

Colors where amazing here. Was hard to shoot cause there is so many people there. was foggy too and no tripods are allowed there. was dying to do some HDR like stuff on some of the things for more detail. was a lot of fun tho. Ended up doing a lot of macro type shots to make sure people weren't in the shots.

Wow I wish I had been there in the fall, those colors are incredible. Did you get any pictures of Mt. Rainier (is that the one you can see from there?)

So guys, I have a question, and would love ya'lls honest opinions. I shot, along with several other photographers, the biggest high school game of the year (county rivalry). It's one of the biggest, if not the biggest rivalry high school game of NC. I went to Pisgah HS, the white team in the photos.

Anyways onto the question if you will. There is one photographer, that I feel only gets put in the papers because of who he is for this particular game, and it happens every year. He covers the black team (Tuscola) every week, and I cover the white team (Pisgah) every week. He shoots a lot of photos, and shoots Tennessee football every now and then; he does have some good shots most of the time, but I've been told by multiple people that my photos were much better than his this week and they have no idea why mine didn't make the papers.

I don't wanna sound like I'm whining or anything like that, but are people just being nice by saying that to me? Just looking for a little critiquing. Click the view more to see the photos. At the bottom under the description it will say who's photo is who's. His name is Patrick Parton, and mine is Wesley.

i been working full time in photo for 11 years now, and i learned a long time ago that it's a lot of politics...

in a number of instances, it's not what you know, but who you know...

i myself have landed some gigs that i never would have scored if i didn't know the art director or VP of marketing on a personal basis first...

i recently lost a really good gig because a creative director wanted to bring her own photographer from her last company in...

i once interviewed someone for an assistant photographer position and felt he was perfect for the job, but my boss nixed it to bring in someone she knew from elsewhere...

unfortunately, it happens all too often in this industry... all you can do is keep doing what you do, and produce what you can, and get your work as visible as you can...

at some point, the right person will take notice and get you your "IN"

I agree with this. It's the way it goes in really any media or art industry. Movies, photo, music, tv, radio, whatever. Connections are everything.

yah when i get local college students asking me for advice, one of the first things i tell them is "to network like there's no tomorrow."

that one person you network with today could be the one hiring you tomorrow...

That definitely makes sense guys thanks. Sad thing is I know the sports editor pretty well. He has been at the particular paper for a very long time, so he covered a lot of the games that I played in when I was in high school and we used to talk quite a bit when I was still playing. Well since being out of school and picking up photography we have been pretty tight, maybe not tight tight, but you get the idea. Tight enough to get a monthly check. Now, I can't say that I know how tight him and the other guy are, but I know he's been freelance shooting for him for a long time. But I understand totally what you guys are getting at.

i would definitely take what you have shot for them and use it to shop yourself around to other publications, including their competition... don't marry yourself to one company... what the newspaper doesn't use, syndicate to others...

From what was posted on that article you photos are a hundred time better, hell half of the ones they posted were either poorly shot or out of focus.

Me personally, I hand out my personal business cards to anyone who I meet up with.

But if you want to stay with that paper, then you need to get to know the Photo editor, as they are ultimately the ones to select photos for publication

My dad gave me the old lenses from his Pentax SLR! It's all super old and needs some cleaning but here are some snaps I've taken already with them mounted on my 60D with a simple adapter pk to eos. All manual with no AF chip so it's sort of a challenge but way fun!

These are all with a Kiron 70-210 f4 except for the last one which is a Kiron 24mm f2

Your better at manual focus then I too. I suck at using my 70-200 and focusing it.
