I lost track thousands of dollars ago.

I'm with Panda on this. Spend your money on lenses and not the body buy some good glass and the lower end body you will be much happier. You can replace the body when your skills improve and you need more functionality and higher end functions. your glass will last you a life time and will out last many bodies so just remember that. I recommend staying away form kit lenses they are kit lenses for a reason buy something with a better build quailty not saying Nikons kit lenses are bad. They just don't have the life span of the higher end lenses.

between those the 3100 is better IMO, but you can get the t1i kit refurbished for $500 through the canon loyalty program. Thats the only reason I went with canon.

For the price of the D3100 w/kit lens, you can get the D40 and a nice lens. The D40 will also do better in low light. Better than any camera under the D90.

Unless you go with the refurb like steve 0 77 mentioned, I would look into the T2i over the T1i; the T1i has been outdated already by the T2i, and the T2i is aonly about $50-100 more for much better camera. As far as the difference between the Canon and the Nikon, don't know. I went with the T2i and am very happy.

Yeah that T2i is sweet, but I was stretching the budget a bit at 500 and I also needed the 55-250 for motocross shots.

Understand, hell for $500 I would of gone that way too! I didn't even know about the loyalty program until you told me about it after I had bought the T2i (thanks for nothing, kidding). Looking at them new the T1i was only like $50 cheaper so no brainer to upgrade.

lol I always spend at least a couple months doing research on big things like this and finding POTN was really helpful.

low light and fast moving subjects will not be affordable. It is possible but you may have focus tracking issues. Plus fast glass is not cheep. Best of luck to you. So in the end as they say you get what you pay for.

Do your best to keep them dry, even if they are weather sealed water has a nasty way of finding a way in. But that said Just try to keep it dry, or carry a towel to dry it off asap. I shoot in the rain from time to time and have not had any issues. Just don't stand outside in a downpour and expect it to work for very long.

Be careful with weather sealed bodies in the rain, I have a repair bill from nikon on a d3 that got water under the rear lcd to prove it. Also I have used a d70 back in the day in a downpour in Hawaii with no issues, just dried it off and shot another 30K shots through it before I sold it with zero issues. It still is in use today as a backup.
If you are going to shoot in the rain look into a aqua tech cover, a little late but if you watched any NFL games in the rain this year its what most of the pros use in bad weather.
