I have the t3i and the lenses that came with it are fine. It was a bundle that came with 2 lenses. Some say that if you are really serious about photography it is better to buy the body and then a better quality lens, but I do not agree. The lens that come with it is good enough. If you are serious enough to want a better lens, you would not buy a t2i or t3i, you would buy a much more expensive body and lens.
So, in short, the t2i (or t3i) is by far the best camera for the money, and the lens that comes with it is just fine.

and the only difference between the 2i and 3i is that the 3i viewfinder swivels is that correct?

Pretty much. Apparently the t3i technology is newer, but I think that is just marketing BS. The t2i is a great camera.

I have the t2i and love the camera a lot. I'd recommend you get the camera and lens and learn from that. Eventually you may need a zoom lens, especially if your shootings stuff that is far away like birds, sporting events, etc. I have the 55-250mm canon lens and it is great.

T2i has been a great camera for my wife and I--package deal with 2 lenses. I also looked at the T3i but from everything I could tell by comparing specs, the only difference is the swivel. My sister-in-law has been doing professional photography for about a year and actually uses the T1i, she has taken some beautiful pictures with it--hers was just a package deal with 2 lenses.

There are kits available for the T2i with 2 lenses.. IMO the T2 is a much better platform than the T3..

I own a t2i and LOVE the camera...but the t3i actually is worth the money in my opinion. If you plan on shooting a lot of video, the t3i has the built in external mic jack and swivel screen which makes life easier when shooting video. If you also plan on using external flashes, it has built in external flash controls, which makes life easier setting up and controlling external flashes. To add these features to the t2i, it would cost you twice as much as the difference between the 2 cameras or more. But, if you don't think you need those features then the t2i is an awesome camera and takes just as good pictures as the t3i.

If you are new to the hobby, then get the T2i with the kit lens. Learn that camera, and when it is holding you back, then get a better body and lenses.

When you figure out what kind of shooting you want to do, then buy the best lenses you can afford to do the job right. I have never regretted buying any of my L lenses, but I have regretted buying inexpensive ones.

well I plan on shooting video probably not a lot though, I also may want to add ext flash sometime down the road. You bring up more points to ponder..I have an old panasonic dv tape palm camcorder that swivels and it is kind of handy. Almost sounds like if i can get the t3i for about the same money as the t2i then I should get the t3..

If the t3i was out when I was purchasing my t2i, I would have got it. More room to grow.

t3i book

Do you all think one of those books on the t3i is worth the 10 bucks or so they cost? As soon as I placed my order amazon sends me a recommendation to buy a book on it.I understand amazon just wants my bucks but are they helpful. if so which one? Yes I am a probie on the slr's.

IMHO you will find just as much "basic" info for free on YouTube...but the books do help. I personally learn faster from visual examples than reading about them in books.
