Ran some point-and-click 35mm in the '80s, bought a cheap 35mm SLR in '89, promptly forgot about it when the Sony Mavica came out.

The 3100 was my first DSLR and my first digital that allowed any real control, and my first of any kind that allowed any real control in 20 years.

Here is my photo of the week, took some convincing to get my friend to put his hand in the air. He is afraid of seagulls.

I was amazed to see this when I zoomed in on this photo! I went looking for birds in flight, but how about a bird's meal in flight? :p

I purchased my camera in Feb. of this year and one thing I learned quickly is how very little light there is up here. Been researching flashes for awhile and finally bit the bullet, my flash came this week. Besides fill light I have always been fascinated with the freezing of movement with a flash. Been doing a lot of trial and error (with a lot of error) using manual flash, manual settings and manual focus. Ended up using the tripod with remote control and finally got one I am happy with, but still room for improvement. Now I am looking at slaves and additional flashes. 300mm prime lens, flash 1/16 power, 200ISO @ 1/180 f/11.

I'm not going to write full reviews because I worked straight though the night and feel a bit hungover! Needless to say though, there are some incredible shots this week.

Since there can only be one... the winner for this week is:

    Mike (Cold Iron)

Awesome! I think this image exemplifies the challenge. I also really get enjoyment out of using a flash to freeze a subject, it really flips the idea of properly exposing a shot on its head. I'm curious if increasing the shutter speed to 1/250 would freeze the the wings more. That being said, the motion blur actually brings some movement and visual interest.

I kind of wish the yellow thing, bird feeder?, was out of the frame but it doesn't significantly detract from the image.

    Beautiful image. Well done sir.

    What 300mm prime?
