Hi MGR,

You can't consider a comparison of Canon & Nikon as is.

In my opinion, Nikon is king of the bigger cameras, while canon is outselling everything in the mid and lower end.

It really depends on what you want.

I have a Canon S3IS, and a pocket size A1000IS.(fits in the jean pocket on motorcycle rides).

So...how is Nawlins. I hope katrina didn't destroy your life.

Stay dry.....!!!!

All is well in Cajun Country....!!!

Canon. I am not a pro-but all the photos AND videos in my gallery and in threads are done with a Cannon Powershot SD790 IS. I think it kicks ass.

Nikon here, between my dad and I we have the D200, D300 and D700. Nikon Lens are awesome. I hear the Kit lens that come with the cameras are much better than the canon kit lenses. My friend is a professional wedding photographer and prefers Nikon as well.

I would say Canon is also a very good camera. I would say hold the cameras and get a feel for them. Someone just like the feel of certain cameras in their hand better than others. I had a Point and Shoot canon for many years and loved it and took awesome pictures.

Good luck, you will be happy either way.

there is really no better brand... its more of what you like and how it feels in your hand... and in most cases its not the camera that makes the best shot its the lens

^^^^^ Agree with PJ.

Also, I've seen some great photos come from crappy cameras.
The biggest factor is the photographer's skill.
Do a google search for "Lomo photos." People use these cheap Russian cameras - they are basically toy cameras - and get awesome photos.

A lot of people think that Nikon cameras are better, and based on the kit lenses Canon used to include with their consumer grade DSLRs they were probably right. Canon's newest generation of kit lenses are a lot better and when you start comparing professional grade lenses Canon makes some of the finest optics available. I've have a Rebel Xti for two years now. I liked feel of it better than the just slightly less expensive Nikon that was on sale. The kit lens was acceptable as was the "consumer" grade 55-200mm lens I bought to go with it.

I've wanted to upgrade my gear for a while but was torn between getting a single good lens or a better body. I decided good glass on a fair body would produce better pictures than the other way around so last month I broke down and spent just over a grand on a EF 70-200 f/4 L USM lens. It's big, heavy, and attracts attention but wow. I wish I had bought it years ago. The images I'm able to take with it are so amazing that I've already bought the 24-70 and 17-40 "L" lenses to cover my normal and wide angle needs.

The lens is also a better financial investment. Used "L" glass in good condition holds an amazing % of it's original price vs used body's drop in value pretty quickly.

Hello MGR,

A Macro Auto focus lens is a nice piece. The Auto focus will allow the lens and the camera to focus automatically (needless to say).

The Macro will allow (or require) you to get up really close for small intricate detail. The distance between the lens and the subject in Macro can be anywhere from 6" to 1.5" depending on the size of the subject.

I hope this helps in some way.....!!!!
