Matthew Hammerdorfer, the 17-year-old Poudre High School junior who collapsed Saturday afternoon during a rugby match, died of cardiac arrest caused by a congenital heart defect, according to the Larimer County Coroner’s Office, which conducted an autopsy today.
Deputy coroner Kari Jones said Matthew Hammerdorfer had three heart surgeries throughout his life due to his heart condition.
Matthew Hammerdorfer, the son of Carl and Kathy Hammerdorfer of Fort Collins, collapsed during a Fort Collins Youth Rugby match in Timnath after e was hit hard in the chest, according to players.
He was taken to Medical Center of the Rockies where he was pronounced dead.
Jones said the hit Matthew Hammerdorfer took to the chest was not a contributing factor in his death.

Today his soccer coach Nick Holley said Matt was a kid who always played hard and loved his friends.
"Whenever he was on the field he played at 100 percent. He will be missed," said Holley, who caoched Matthew for two years.
Counselors will be available at Poudre High School on Monday to help students and staff deal with his death.
