Yes, indeed. Prayers for all in the area and especially the people that will go in to help in the aftermath.

According to the news, the Japanese part of the Tsunami hit the north eastern part of the country. Near Sendai, which is about 350km north of Tokyo

Things are looking very grim this morning over there. I'm a geologist so I find earthquakes fascinating, but it's horrible when they affect people's lives in such a tremendous way.

For those wanting to follow along with the latest news, CNN has set up a picture and video blog:

These are as of this morning (U.S. time)

What's particularly upsetting is that this is far from over. The general rule of thumb is that after an earthquake of, say, magnitude 6.0, within the next month there will be 10 aftershock quakes with magnitude 5.0, and 100 with 4.0, and so on, as the earth's crust adjusts to the new stress field created by the first quake.

So in this case, with an 8.9 magnitude quake, I expect several more quakes with magnitudes between 7-8 to occur in the coming days. For reference, the Loma Prieta quake (world series 1989) was only a 6.9 magnitude.

The major difference between this and previous world quakes like chili and Haiti is that this country KNEW it was on a fault line. Japan has some of the highest quake resistant building codes in the world. This will bode well in thier favour to lessen the damage..
