I'm not very open about myself or my family on the board but Tuesday night was by far the most emotionally trying time of my life.

My son is a type 1 Diabetic and has been since May of 2008. Sunday night he came down with a stomach bug and Monday was sick as hell. I stayed home with him and Tuesday he wasn't any better so my wife took him to the ER. He was in DKA (Diabetic Ketoacidosis). He was rushed to the Tacoma Children's hospital and admitted into the ICU. I left work about the time he was in the ambulance and hauled balls home to grab a few things then broke about every traffic law out there to get to the hospital.

He was in pretty bad shape and Tuesday night was nearly in a coma. I spent from 9pm that night until 3:30 wendesday morning wondering if it would be the last time I held his hand... He was bad and what it was doing to him killed me.

The Doctor told us that his brain was swelling due to the DKA and that is why he was almost in a coma. He also said that with the brain swelling that if it was severe enough it could lead to permanent brain damage or death. Not exactly what you want to hear as a parent.

I stayed with him the whole time asking the nurses every question I could and waiting. Around 3:30am he started to come around and responded to simple commands. We both stayed by his side until he woke at 8am and looked at me and said "Dad, I'm thirsty" I lost it...

We are all home now and I'm going to be with him tonight checking on him frequently...

I as a father can not go through that again.

I hope his condition continues on the positive path as it has in the last 24 hours, and prayers go out to your family. I don't have any kids but reading through your post almost makes me feel like I do. It's painful just reading through your experience. Best wishes. And may god give you the strength to deal with it all

Best of luck to your entire family. Many of us will never experience what you went through, but the way you explained that... I'm sure all of us could feel how you felt. Best of luck for you and your son.

Good to hear he's doing better. Being EMS I'm used to seeing people at their worst and having to maintain an icy cool yet caring demeanour. Couldn't imagine what it would be like if it were my own.

Best of luck. Below are some things I try to teach the patients I diagnose as diabetics - hopefully this helps. Please don't think I mean to imply "you should have known better." I don't!

As I'm sure you know, or will learn, being sick makes diabetics fluctuate their sugars like mad.

Of course, blood sugar being high can cause nausea/vomiting and MIMIC a "stomach bug."

Bottom line (learning point): any time he's sick, check the sugar more often. Any time he's got a belly ache, check the sugar. It can suck checking so often, but hopefully you would catch a problem before it gets this severe.

Stay strong - it's a tough disease, but can be managed. Just lots of little nuances.

May God bless your family and cast a blanket of love around all of you... I ask that He send his angels of protection to watch over your son... May He provide wisdom to your son's doctors, and guide their caring hands... I ask He give you the power and strength of a father's limitless love for his family.

As a father myself, I would do anything to take away pain from my children. You are doing all you can do as a father and I pray to God that He will surround your whole family with His grace. Hang in there.
