Sorry you're having to go through this, I've never gone out and bought a pet, they have always just kinda shown up in my life. My cat I found under a tool box at LAX on the hangar deck, my Yellow Lab was at the shelter literally a day or two from being put down because no one wanted her, can't figure that one out, best dog I've ever had, her only issue is she has seizures. Try to make her last days comfortable and return the love she's given, she'll let you know when it's time to let go.

    Good luck and take care

    Gary

    getting there....
sorry to hear about it Joe. its tough to make a decision to free a pet of its pain....but also necessary. no need for them to suffer any more than they are. we had a pet lab that i had since i was 2 years old............he got cancer when i was 16, and got to the point he swelled up so bad that he couldnt even walk to his water bowl.....he just sat in his area all day and night..........so we made the decision to end his pain......................it sucked so bad that we had to do it.......but we knew he was alot better off.

If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this -- the last battle -- can't be won.
You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.
We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.
Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.
Don't grieve that it must be you
    Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close -- we two -- these years, Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Hey i know it is hard to lose a best friend. my dad went thru it, he lost his best friend for having arhritis and cancer. We had to put him to sleep because my dad couldnt watch him suffer.
Now we have a 5 year old dog we rescued from the TAllahassee humane society (got him when he was 8 weeks old) and me my dad and my mom always say that, Everytime he wakes up..... is a bonus day.

But when it does happen, instead of being sad about it, Just imagine him in "doggy" heaven along with all of his other friends. And put this in as well, he will be FREE of everything.

But then you have the joy and fun that you had with your sheltie all over again. I know it breaks your heart. But its the way of life and you cant always help or change that. Your sheltie will always remember you and you will always remember him.

I'm sorry Joe, I went thru it and it's the worst, but it has to be done. Just make sure your holding Madison when it happens, you need to be the last person Madisons' eyes close. Peace to you

I'm sorry to hear this, Joe. I have experienced cancer in loved ones.....it's no good. It may hurt, but I hope everything is quick, peaceful and painless.

    I will regret that forever.
My eyes well up just thinking about it.

Joe, I dont envy you or anyone else that has to grieve for the loss that will or has come, but I do envy you all for the strength and courage it takes to make such a shitty decision for the well being of your best friend. It's prpbably the least selfish thing a human can do when its called for. My condolances to you Sir.
