does this happen to anyone else?

Hey Tw i was wondering if you guys would suggest in buying a bug deflecter..? i live in colorado and everytime i go on the dam highwayyy my whole f n windshield gets coverd of bugs.. so my question is, would you reccomend a bug deflecter?

Well, personally I have never seen them work, at all. My dad has a factory one on his Tacoma and it doesnt help at all.

 

I have one on my truck that came with it and i barley get bugs on my windshield. I didn't like it at first but it grew on me so I'm keeping it on.

 

I have an aftermarket AVS I think. I live in Louisiana where our state bird is a bug so no matter what we have bugs on the windshield. But it does help some and keeps the front of the hood from chipping.

 

I had them on a couple of vehicles and found they don't keep bugs off the windshield at all. They do help with stone chips on the front edge of the hood. I gave up on them since most of them require small patches of plastic film or pads stratigically placed to keep the deflector from rubbing the paint off.

 

so i set up a poll on if i should or should not get one..

 

i wouldnt bother with a bud deflector it seems, just keep some window cleaner and a towel in ur truck. As for protecting from rock chips, 3m clear protective film is waaaay better

 

I've always used one to just keep the edge of the hood from getting hit by rocks. With the 2nd gen, I don't plan on using it.

 

I have a Toyota OEM deflector and it doesn't do jack as far as keeping bugs off the windshield. I like the way they look though and it does a great job of protecting the front of my hood.

Reminds me, I need to find a couple more clips to hold that bastard down so it'll stop flopping around.

 

Definitely don't on a second gen. I personally think my truck looks better with one though and thats the only reason I got it. It does absolutely nothing as far as deflecting bugs.

Not so sure about bugs, but I got it to protect the hood from ice salt and rocks...does that very well!

 

It's not a bug deflector but is a hood protector which works quite well to keep rocks from chipping your hood. Buy one that doesn't use metal strips to attach it. I have an AVS.

 

Living here in the NE, you have all kinds of crap on the roads between the constant construction and the sand/salt they throw all over them in the winter. I've had them on all six trucks that I've owned. While I was waiting on delivery for this one, I caught a chip the size of a pencil eraser down to bare metal. I've had none since. Are they 100% foolproof? No, but they will save the leading edge of your hood. To each their own!

 

I've never heard that, and in 6 years of driving with one on I haven't personally experienced that.

You can figure out my answer by now, but I like mine. Even if it doesn't deflect bugs, I like how it looks and it's been working fine for me for six years. As for whether they work or not, I can only tell you my personal experience with/without one. My wife's new CRV didn't come with one and driving around during July was like driving in the rain, the wipers couldn't keep up with the bug guts. I bought her a weathertec guard and installed it, and while bugs still hit the windshield, it's not nearly as bad as it was.

Basically, if you like how they look, I don't see why you shouldn't get one.

 

In my experience...I bought my truck right before the 2006 winter in upstate NY and got a bunch of dings from road salt within the first couple months. I installed a hood protector and I haven't had any new hood dings ever since. Personally, I like the way it looks, particularly on a black truck, so that's enough for me.

 

I think the only one's that look half way decent are the low profile. They keep the front edge of the hood nice but don't stop bugs from getting splattered on the windshield. I got mine from Cabela's after removing the pos oem one before it ruined the paint.

 

had the OEM deflector on my truck for a few weeks, after making a weekend trip to NC and having the front of my white truck covered in bugs i found it pretty useless. esp with the OEM one, it has a gap between the deflector itself and the hood so alot of bugs got underneath which was a pain to clean. not to mention after reading a thread about the mounts damaging/rubbing the paint off i decided to take it off.

 

Bug Deflector= great eye candy, but that is about it.
I have had bug shields on previous trucks and just did not have great results. Bugs are bugs....they fly at all levels.

I would not buy one. JMHO.

 

I bought one from Toyota dealership, then took it to a garage and had it color matched to my truck. It helps alot with the hood chipping.
