Bully Tailgate Pad Lock

Just installed. Got it from Stylin Trucks out of clearance section for $4-. It fits kind of loose, but seems like it's going to do the trick. I sprayed it with WD-40 before installing to try to prevent any rust from happening. I am going to put some plasti-dip on as much of the exposed metal & tips as I can so it will cut back on some of the rattle & paint scratching.

Good idea and all, but I wonder how much more effective dollar-for-dollar it will be compared to the hose clamp mod? Just sayin'...

 

Hey RV7, I guess it would depend on what kind of area you park in. Some of the areas I go to, the lock would definitely defeat the attempt over the hose clamp. Some of the slime that go out looking for parts already have some of the basic burg. tools in their possession like a screwdriver. Call me paranoid, I have already had a couple attempts on my tailgates on other trucks that I was able to catch in time. I am done worrying about loosing this one now.

How strong is the "loop" that goes around the post of your tailgate? Will it defeat a casual attempt at cutting it?

 

Nice review OP. I wrapped my loop in electrical tape to prevent any scratching.

It does cost a bit more than the hose clamp, but this one needs an actual key, looks tidy, and allows you to lock and unlock the clamp very easily. I felt pretty good about the purchase after the first few times I removed the tailgate.

The loop isn't anything special. It's similar to a hose clamp loop but solid (doesn't have the little grooves to guide the screw).

 

WD-40 is actually a De-greaser. With no grease or oil to protect it from the elements it will just be bare metal = will rust even faster.. If anything, you want to pile on the grease or coat it with something.

 

Am I missing something? OP stated the price was $4 right? Is $4 a high price?

 

I'd pay $4 over using a hose clamp....

 

true about the WD-40. get yourself some gun lubricant or something like that, white lithium would also do the trick.

 

Hey racerx, Just a little info on the whole WD-40 thing, The history on it was it was originally developed for the Navy years ago & the final attempt was the 40th. It was originally made with some fish oil & other oils. The name WD-40 actually stands for Water Displacement 40th try. WD-40. (Some useless knowledge from the History Chanel or Discovery Chanel, forget which one.

The loop around the tailgate post is definitely more durable than the hose clamp but does fit a bit looser.

 

You got a deal. I just checked and they have it listed at $20.

It was a great deal. & I don't know if I got it at a miss marked price or what, but great deal non the less.

It has definitely already paid for itself. This morning, I got to work at 4:30 in Hollywood. Parkied on the street & went in. (First one at work) Walked around & unlocked all the necessary dooors & other bldgs in the area. At 6:30 when I opened the door to let all the other Employees in, I noticed my gate was open & laying open all the way down to the bumper. The cables were undone & the cam was disconnected. Luckily they lowered the gate slowly & lightly & didn't mar the paint on the gate. I reconnected the cables & cam & laughed. They have to move on to another truck or come back with better tools. HAHA

 

Sounds like this was $4 well spent. I personally would be willing to spend $20 on this for security.
