I got my Borla CatBack installed a couple days ago, and I am EXTREMELY happy with it! It's a very nice deep tone, and there is no in cab drone whatsoever.
It's actually very quiet in the cab, and doesn't interfere with conversation.

At the higher RPM's it definitely starts to growl, and I would confidently say there is a power improvement. I've also noticed the truck idles at 600 rpm, doesn't fluctuate and is very quiet, the truck loves the Borla!
I haven't had it long enough to say if mpg has increased, but I'm betting it does.

I put a video on youtube of my comparison to stock.
I ordered part #140140 which is for the double cab long bed Tacoma, you can buy the system for other cab configurations as well.

Install was a breeze, after getting the stock exhaust removed, I had this one bolted up within 45 minutes, all I needed was a 15mm socket and driver, and a pry bar to removed the rubber bushings holding the stock exhaust up.

If you are looking for a good exhaust system, I would put this at the top of your list.

Here's the Video, I'll be making another video with more clips.

picked up a buddy from the airport today, and he said he could just barely hear the difference in the cab. perfect! I also put the pedal down on the way there, definitely seems to pull into the higher rpm's! woo!

Depends where you get it, for me shipping to Canada was expensive, but it always is.

Do some searching online, I'm sure you can find a descent price, I also don't know much about them for the first gen. I'll see what I can dig up too.

now that it's broken in, it's a bit louder, which is great, it is still by no means loud whatsoever, but sounds awesome!

Im definitely satisfied with my Borla exhaust as well. Not to mention that i got it for 60 bucks! Some guy on craigslist (im assuming he picked up wrecked cars for a living since he had like 3 junked out cars in the front) took it off a 2010 tacoma and was selling it for 80 bucks, mine is an 2001. I called him up, thank god his wife answered, and offered 60 and they took it! I took it to my muffler shop and it was an almost identical fit so they bent the pipe a bit and made it fit into mine. So for 90 bucks i got a Borla exhaust system :)

The headers i just ordered off of autoanything.com. Regular price are 478 so i used a coupon code (code:pBEB3) 15% off which brought down the price to 407.
