What's bad about Fram oil filters?

I noticed a lot of people don't like Fram oil filters. On my old Jeep thats all I used. Note I used the TG style which is the better one. I have to say that at 3500 miles the oil still looked clean golden brown . Has anyone had one fail on them. Id like to know. CD

 

Just cut one open and you will see why they are so hated. Overall they do meet the standard however they filter the least amount of any filter I have seen. I use Napa Gold filters. They are made by Wix.

 

They use cardboard endcaps unlike other filters. Although I have yet to hear of Frams causing any type of engine failures.

I've used Fram filters and don't have a problem with them. Many people use them...without any problems. As long as your changing your filter & oil regularly, Fram has a good enough reputation to do the job properly (or else, they wouldn't exist as a company if the filters are that bad).

I gotta hand it to the engineers though. How DO you make a filter that filters poorly and still overly restricts oil flow?

I have used FRAM Tough Guard along with Mobil 1 oil for a long time and have no problems. had 200,000+ on my last Truck and the Oil was still fine at change (every 3500). just like any other product out there, dont buy the cheap, and be regular and consistent on your changes and all is well.

 

I have been using Fram oil filters for over 30 years without a single hitch. I normally buy the Tough Guard since it came out. Never a problem with the oil or engine. I never change my oil regulary at 3500 miles, normally its closer to 4000 miles, sometimes it will creep up to 7000 but I use synthetic oil, it's better suited to handle the longer useage.

So I think it's a personal call as to which oil filer you use and you need to take into account how hard you push your engine.

All I used since I startd driving was Fram.......now I don't change my own oil......so it's whatever the Dodge or Toyota dealer uses.

On my bikes I use OEM filters.

 

Lotsa folks use them and clain no problems...and I used to because of brand familiarity. After I read a ton of stuff and cut a few apart myself, I decided that regular Purolators were a whole world better for the same money. I use WIX, Purolator, or OEM myself nowadays.

 

I don't like orange things.

 

My Pops used fram filters on his 83 corolla after about 5k miles. He sold his corolla after 333k miles so i used fram filters on my 92 toy p/u. i never had problems. ill use oem filters on my new taco since the dealer offers $12.99 oil/filter changes.

 

FUCK i wish i read this thread earlier. I just had a fram oil filter put in my truck. the fram heavy duty.. damn it and i just changed my oil with amsoil! damnit! FAIL FAIL FAIL!

 

Purolator micronic, k&n, M1 or oem...........

 

I had a 2001 Jeep Cherokee before my Tacoma. At 140,000 miles I had a low oil pressure problem (common on the Cherokees). On the Jeep forums they talked about getting away from Fram because of restricting the oil. I switched to NAPA Gold and gained about 4 lbs. of oil pressure.

 

I would just change the filter and leave the new oil fill alone. You'll dribble a little out from the galleries when you pull the filter. Fill the new filter with fresh oil and a dribble of new oil in the engine to account for your little dribble from the filter removal (if need be.) Easy Peasy. Done it many times.

For the most part they are not to kind to Fram. I read an article there that compared different filter brands. They cut them apart and measured not only filter area but mentioned what kind of bypass, if any, that they had. As I recall, it took next to nothing to get the Fram to go into bypass and then you have no filtration at all.
