radar detector ?

plannin on gettin a radar detector soon, any suggestions? wanna keep it under 300$

I have had a few over the years and V1is about the best. dont get a cheep one or it will go off everytime you pass a supermarket.
to be honest they really are a waste. first of all if you are speeding, it is best to have a pace car in front. 2, if you are alone, and driving fast, when it goes off you are nailed! I still drive fast on the highway, but its the same as when I had my mustang, someone is always going to drive faster and let them!

 

I have two Valentine V-1's and highly recommend them.
Detecting radar is relatively easy, the hard part is filtering out the junk and falses and Valentine does this better than the rest.

I use the Whistler XTR series, I think mine is the 543 or 566. Don't remember atm. I bought at Costco for 99.99 and at the time they were 139.00 everywhere else. I love it and with the different modes: Highway, City, City1 City2 I can filter out almost all of the false signals ... most of which come from X band. You can also turn that off entirely if you live in a big city. You'll only find X band in rural areas nowadays.

 

By the time that your detector goes off, I already have you.

it has saved my ass MANY times when a cop was lurking on the shoulder, behind a bend or large bushes, just waiting for someone to haul past him. It also works great for knowing when a cop is moving up closer behind you in traffic.

V1 is the only detector with direction indicators to know where the signal is coming from. You will only think this feature is unnecessary until you use it.

not true, unless you are using laser or waiting until the last second to actually flip the gun 'on'. when officers sit in their car (or stand next to it) with the gun on, a detector can pick it up over a mile away (in perfect conditions).


EDIT: A true scenario that happened when I had my Subaru:
I was driving home in the fast lane of the toll road, doing 75-80MPH, plenty fast to get pulled over in this particular area.
As I approach the crest of a certain hill an AMG Mercedes comes up behind me pretty fast, easily doing over 90. There was traffic to my right, so I did not move over immediately. Normally I would slam the go-pedal and have some fun with this Benz on the nearly empty road, but at the bottom of the hill I was about to descend was a hiding spot where cops loved to grab speeders coming down too fast.

Right as my V1 sounded to indicate a cop was in the hiding spot I gently rolled off the gas to about 70MPH, which really pissed off the Benz. He made an erratic maneuver to a slower lane, mashed the gas, and sped up past 100 by the time we hit the bottom of the hill. The Benz was a good 1/8 - 1/4 mile ahead of me when the red lights came on and I watched him pull to the side.

 

This argument is so funny to me. I can't count the number of times I've been on some of our rural highways when my radar pops a K or KA band and a 1/2 mile later down the road around some twist there's either a cop driving towards me or parked on the shoulder, or trying to hide.

And on a freeway even if it's on demand when you tag the car in front of me even up to a mile away my detector is going to pick it up as a pulse. Unless your using laser, but what departments use is public knowledge and a VERY small pct. of departments use laser. They're to expensive. In the Seattle metro area only 3 or 4 departments use laser and those departments only have a few guns per area and they are almost all used exclusively in the city.

 

OP, why do you need a detector? Seriously?

I got popped once for speeding and I'll never do it again. He told me there was absolutely no reason for me to speed since it wasn't a life or death situation, that if I woke up earlier I wouldn't be late.

That was not only embarrassing but I realized how much less stressed I am if I manage my time better so I don't HAVE to speed. Call me crazy but I approached the issuing cop (at the same corner) and thanked him for giving me a ticket.

Ever driven on a SoCal freeway when it's not rush hour? The traffic flows at 10-20MPH above the speed limit regularly - sometimes you get a ticket, sometimes the cop is right there next to you doing 80MPH.

As a driver, I feel the right to know what's going on around me. If I know that the exact same action (speeding) can go unnoticed by a cop, or get me pulled over, I demand to know when said cop is watching.

You use LIDAR 100% of the time? If not, you don't have anything on anyone running a V1 or Escort. Too many variables. Other cars. How long ago did you turn your radar on? Instant on/RF Hold or not, you may have given yourself away as I was approaching.

 

yeah I have cb and a 9500ix and in the city the radar saves my ass constantly. plus the gps in the 9500ix is very nice
