I've already done one on a rear plate bumper for a 1st gen. I didnt really have time to get pics though due to time constraints with shipping it to the customer by a deadline, but he promised some pictures within a couple weeks once mounted. The carrier will be essentially the same for the 05+rear bumpers.

^are you able to add one to a finished bumper or does the bumper need to be specially made for the tire carrier?

Needs to be specifically made for the carrier unless its one of my new ones after the current batch is finished. I'll be getting a pre-cut hole in the main bumper plate for the tire carrer spindle to slip through and get welded in. All the 05+ rears I've built so far dont have this hole cut in them.

Could always sell that one down the road and get a new one with the carrier if you really wanted. Probably wouldnt lose that much on it.

I was looking at the bumpers here and I thought of the following: during an impact a bumper made of soft material (e.g. stock bumper) absorbs energy by being smashed, and must only transfer a small portion onto frame - that is given the impact is relatively small and doesn't destroy the main structural elements of the bumper completely. On the other hand a bumper made of stiff and solid material - as the ones seen in this thread - what would be the scenario ? My feeling is that they are mighty strong and wouldn't bend or crack and thus pretty much all the energy will get transfered through the mounts onto the frame and I suspect that would have a greater chance of damaging the frame. Would like to get some comments. :)

Yes, this is true. These bumpers are solid and designed to handle winching and bumping into things but will transfer load vs crumpling. In a significant frontal impact, the crumple zone of the trucks frame will likely buckle before the center portion of the bumper. This is going to be exactly the same scenario with other bumpers... AP, Shrockworks, Ken mtn, Demello, etc.

    Eric,

Don't laugh, but would it be feasible for you to fab a front tire carrier that works with your Ulti-Mount? Basically, something that plugs into the receiver like the winch cradle does... Thanks!

The force window between destroying a front bumper and NOT causing frame damage vs not destroying an after market front bumper but damaging the frame is exceedingly small. So small a differnce its not something Id lose sleep about. I bet that scenario never occurs for anyone on this forum... generally you will either have a smashed frame OR not casue structural damage due to a small hit. You can bet on the unlikely event that you wont have any small hits that damage your stock bumper or that you wont total your front end by going with a stock bumper but that would be a silly bet IMO.

An inside bed spare tire mount, utilizing the bed rails to secure(and possibly drilling the bed to secure the bottom) will be something I design this summer most likely. :)
