Just out of curiosity, (I like to know how things are made), how do you "make/convert" LS460 projectors?

    Good question!

The solenoid on the bottom of the LS460 is massive and (in my opinion) looks ugly. The focus of the "R" conversion is to internalize the solenoid so I can chop off the bottom "leg" of the projector.

    In addition, I also:

    - Modify the shield so it has about twice as tall of a high beam
    - Install STi-R clear lens and tune the projector
    - Convert the projector to accept D2S bulbs

All of these things makes for a more aesthetically-pleasing install and better performer overall.

Looks like the first set is in queue already. If you want the best lighting for your newer Tacoma, I guarantee nothing will touch these while remaining legal.

Sooo, probably revealing my ignorance here, what do you do with these when a light "burns out"? Do you just replace the projector?

Generally just a few weeks. By the time the internals get back from paint it's a few days later. I have a body shop paint the parts so l know they're flawless.

    No mods yet...
    Andrew,

I'm not trying to be an a-hole, but please help educate me (and probably others too) on the pros of this ~$1k upgrade to my headlights? Is this cosmetic only or is there a functional advantage?

    Thanks,
    -Russ

    Hey man,
True retrofits (where the headlamp housing is modified to accept a projector) allow for a brighter, whiter light without producing dangerous glare to other drivers. Now, here's the rub; it's not cheap. A plug and play kit costs $150 or so (but we don't want that because of the glare it produces). A retrofit setup to DIY costs about $400, give or take. A lot of people do a retrofit to a second set of headlamps, which is another $300. So right off the bat you're looking at $700 just for parts, if you have someone else do it for you, you're in it for labor as well. So it's easy to see the bill come to $1K. What Andrew has is the difference between a Toyota and a Lexus lol. Premium components, plus labor = $$$$. It's about what you want; I have no doubts if I had the money I'd definitely look to pick up a set of these. Unfortunately, I need to save up as it is for a conventional retrofit because there's no way in hell I'll be able to get away with putting my headlights into my oven lol.

When you look at the minis, there is more or less an aesthetic advantage as I honestly didn't feel that they provided a big change overall as compared to stock. When you move up to a full retrofit you 100% no doubt are getting an increase in performance. The width of the beam completely fills the ditches and the intensity under the cutoff is intense. I have yet to see the true performance of the 460s, but I can only imagine how good they are when I look at how good my FX-Rs are. All I can say is that you wouldn't think that all of the OEMs are starting to move towards projectors if there wasn't a purpose would you?

Not an a-hole question at all as it's a lot of money. Basically for headlight upgrades, both in looks and performance, there are tiers. This is the top end. Best performance, best looks, best reliability. Toyota wouldn't have made the headlights this good if you paid extra for OEM Bi-Xenons, basically.
