Rules that you found are standard that meant to CARS MANUFACTURERS or CARS REASSEMBLERS before being sold to the general public.

They don't apply to mortals like you and me, because cars are ALREADY sold. So you can put ABS off button. The only thing that you aren't protected are civil lawsuits if you get into accident.

    Read the chapter 571.7 ("applicability").

So, even car manufacturers are in illegal situation by providing a ABS "offroad" button, which, technically, is disabling ABS partly ... ! It may be the reason why they call it "ABS offroad" instead of "ABS off". I got a Jeep Patriot that had this button, and I was able to LOCKUP the wheels. According to owner manual:
Notice that they aren't mentionning about snow and "on road". They are cautious, because Americans loves ridiculous lawsuits.

Also, when you enable rear diff lock, you are disabling ABS system too. Technically, you are providing a button to disable ABS.

For who who remembered that insurances compagnies where giving reductions on premium when your car was ABS equipped. Shortly after, they noticed that the rate of accident was same as one without ABS system, they removed it.

As was mentioned in another identical subject thread, Toyota was able to provide testing information that showed that ABS does not work properly with a positive traction device since the traction device is designed to not allow wheel slip from left to right side. Because of this, enabling ABS would be counter productive to the positive traction device, and how it operates. Since both systems are intended to provide better traction and control on low-traction surfaces, Toyota and other manufacturers who provide factory selectable positive traction devices were authorized to allow ABS to be disabled only while the positive traction device was engaged. So no, they did not violate any laws regarding ABS.

Well, yeah, I can buy into that, but the OP and other people have been claiming an inch of slush at 10 MPH and they slid through intersections into 18-wheelers, and that's BS. It's like, "One time, I was at band camp, and my friend hit the brakes, and my trombone went through the windshield, and hit a motorcycle driver in the head!"

On snow, maybe with a layer of ice beneath it, but slush with pavement beneath the slush? I call BS on that.

No need for a condescending attitude towards those suggesting alternative driving tactics either. Suggesting alternatives is a valid response. Regardless, if you're steadfastly opposed to the ABS system (and are unwilling to listen to alternative driving tactics), disable it. As you've obviously discovered, there are at least a dozen websites, and several threads here (complete with images), showing exactly how to do so.

Advice from someone who lives in an area with no snow, ice or slush? LOL
    (NOW I'm being condescending!)
And to the guy "calling bullshit" on sliding (due to the ABS), I have slid through stop signs, past my mail box all while going barely faster than walking speed.

In case you missed it, I'll repost the exact same comment I posted earlier in this very thread…

"LOL. Damn, Oz. Do you really believe "southerners" are limited (in travel, experience, etc) to just the South? If so, it'll probably surprise you to learn at least some of us have lived elsewhere as well. For example, I've lived not all that far from you (Tacoma & Bremerton WA), the New England area (MA & RI), and in northern Europe. Have driven in snow enough to at least have a opinion, without dismissal based on some silly stereotype."

Well it seems the solutions are:

Cut the abs wire for the mod... (Hell no not on my two month old 2013 but you go right on ahead friends)

Get 800$ tires to stop better

Drive three mph and give yourself four hundred yards to stop behind something
    or the typical
    LEARN TO DRIVE NOOB

Ima suggest something crazy here that this whole forum seems to ignore/ overlook
    Ask the dealer!
I looked all over for some magical sequence to disable my seatbelt alarm an gave up. Asked the dealer and the service guy was like oh yeah totally and bam five min later it was done.

That being said, I told him about this problem & pointed out that when the hubs are locked, the traction control/ abs is totally disabled, and when you hit the button that looks like a car on bacon it shuts off "except in times of severe yaw or braking"
So it knows how, but decides not to shut off sometimes. I'm waitin on an answer from him this week I'd love to have a simple fix like just go ask the dealer & have the car on bacon button do its fuckin job

Okay, lets see if I have all this straight. Brakes (regardless of type) tend to lock up, and tires tend to slide, on snow or ice. Wheels sliding on snow or ice provide almost no braking power and very little steering control. And, with little or no traction, a 4x4 is not going to stop much faster than any other vehicle.

Instead, in such conditions, one must change both driving and braking tactics. The most obvious, since braking is clearly going to be slower and less effective, is slowing down considerably and allowing more room between oneself and other vehicles. Of course, while this might seem bloody obvious, I personally cannot count how many times I've seen 4x4 owners foolishly speeding down the road, passing other vehicles, on snow or ice. :boink:

Next, one must work at preventing the wheels from locking up. ABS can help up to a point, but it certainly won't do it entirely for the driver or in all conditions (the owners manual warns of this). On snow or ice, brakes must be applied gently (don't stomp on the pedal), and immediately released and applied again gently if the wheels lock up. This applies equally to both ABS and non-ABS brakes (disabling ABS isn't going to change it).

After that, there's not really much else one can do. If conditions are that bad, one should consider traction aid devices (snow chains, spiked snow tires, or similar). Another option is just staying off the road until conditions improve - there are darn few places one really has to be that is worth risking a life, or that of others, to get there. If one wants to play in the snow (something I enjoy), do it off road and well away from other vehicles.

The ABS can be disabled without cutting wires, you can just pull the pin out of the connecter and then wire it to a switch. It's how I did mine and i can return it back to stock without a trace if i wanted to.

A dealer will not disable your ABS if you ask them to. Even if they could it's a safety device and they wont do it.

I won't even get into all the other nonsense. All i will say is that it seems many people here either don't drive in the snow often or think that vehicles never existed without ABS. The bottom line is a good driver can do just as well and avoid obstacles just as easily if not better than on an ABS equipped car. ABS was mandated because of all the idiots who don't know what the hell they are doing.

Actually you will stop in a shorter distance on loose traction surfaces without ABS

Tires, Tires Tires!!! On any car or truck, tires are the most critical component. You could have that TRD big brake kit (which I think only fits an X-runner anyway) or upgraded TRD pads w/ cryofrozen rotors, and without better-than-factory tires, all upgraded brakes will do is lockup the brakes faster at the moment the wheel slips forward due to lack of road/tire traction. The factory tires are a very poor selection and are awful for wet traction performance in this truck, and unfortunitely it usually takes a near miss event for a new driver to realize this (based on all the stories I read here, and myself included). However at their price they are probably very good for maximizing the gas mileage when establishing the EPA rating. The mpg performance, at the given cost, alone may have been one of the higher rating factors when the engineers and production planners who probably had a heated debate over the tire selection, selected them as standard equipment.
