    1. Leave the truck/car at home and ride the bike to where I'm going. That's the mode of choice unless I'm racing somewhere far from home.
    2. Throw it in the back of the truck and go. I hammer the shit out of my bikes anyway, doesn't matter if they get some chips or dings.

You guys are overthinking this whole thing by several orders of magnitude.

Hey curious if anyone with a tire swing out on the rear bumper uses a hitch mounted rack and if the bikes will clear with the spare mounted?

Just as fast as a pad and takes no time to pull it out or put it in. Also no worries about beating up the frame.

    Hey y'all,

So I was offroading a bit with my bike on the Toyota "Locking Fork Bike Rack" that mounts to the bed rail system and the metal cross bar somehow got the crap bent out of it. Bike won't fit on the rack because the long silver piece is bent to hell.

Does anyone know if I can buy individual replacement parts anywhere? I'd rather not buy an entire new rack...

    Thanks for the info.

I keep mine under a shell for security. This is an ARE MX. I bought an extended height shell so bikes could fit in upright without having to drop the seats.

Bikes are held upright using Yakima Blockheads fastened to a sheet of plywood.

I used my bed mat as a template to cut the plywood so it nests in the bed between the wheel wells and the tailgate. This keeps it firmly in place. I didn't want them permanently fastened to the bed because that would interfere when I need to haul other stuff. I installed a BedRug on the tailgate for crawling into the bed. Knee saver.

I staggered the block heads so the handle bars wouldn't interfere with each other, and also made sure to mount them far enough aft so they wouldn't contact the glass door on the shell. I could have used three block heads, but wanted to save room for the cargo pouch. I keep basic supplies in there: tool box, shoes, helmets, water bottles, camel backs, etc.

I primed and painted the plywood before installing the carpet. Didn't want moisture in there to warp it. Next I used double sided tape to keep the carpet in place.

...and then stapled the excess to the bottom surface.

I've been using this type of setup for about 15 years. It works great. I only wish I could find a better solution to store the front wheels.

Lastly, I have a Kuat NV for occasions when I'm hauling 3 or 4 bikes.

I fit 3 bikes under my softopper.
The slotted screws were temporary. I replaced them with socket cap screws.
I had to stagger the mounts to keep the bars from hitting each other, the bike in the center is a 29er.

I also like your idea cooleronline!
I still might buy a hitch rack so we can bring our bikes on camping trips. No space at all with this setup.

    Just finished my rack.

54 Inch Yakima Tracks mounted to the bedside sheet metal via plus-nuts and
2 inch stainless steel screws (the tracks are tightened down over the plastic rail cap).

Yakima Control towers, landing pads and round bars with the 1UP USA roof rack.

    Set up seems very Stout!

I opted for this set up so i could keep the functionality of the tonneau cover when traveling with my bikes (also more room in the bed).
