Anybody running one of systems? I have a 2014 prerunner. Is it worth it?

I don't have one so I can't speak from 100% experience on these on a Tacoma, but expect to gets lots of replies stating that "your truck already has a built in one", "your factory one is better", and all that good jazz. Pretty much comes down to personal choice on if you want to hear it often or not. Also, be sure to check if it'll pass the smog test since it looks like you're from California.

If you want one then buy one! Personally I would splurge for an AFE prodry filter instead to save tons of money.

    Too few to list.
I have the original TRD CAI (similar to AFE Stage 2). I believe it's the only one dyno'd to have a very slight increase. It's all preference. I like it as it allows for better pedal feel though not smog compliance.

Unless you have a supercharger with greater than stock boost you will see almost zero gains. Stock intake is a cold air intake, with cruising intake temps only a degree or two above ambient.

I've heard both sides - some say it does nothing, some say try gain a few horses and MPG from it....I would def keep researching prior to coming to a decision

I have a AFE cold air intake and exhaust!!! It shows a gain of 39 hp & 51 torque...I think just never buying a air filter is worth it!!!!

    I have a K&N 63 on my 2011 and had one on my 2002
Over 170,000 miles on my 2002
    Over 75,000 on my 2011
Properly serviced it works fine ... I never had any issues with MAF sensor covered in oil or dust in the intake pipe past the K&N filter

Whatever you decide just ensure you know how to properly service the filter

My Ultraguage readout keeps me from pushing the gas pedal too far so I'm getting around 21mpg

increase or decrease in mpg will vary depending on how you drive

A lot of guys just do the deck plate mod. If you feel like cutting a hole in your factory air box.

nope, not true at all, the stock box has acustic plenum that gives the waves some place to be absorbed and pulled from the main body of air.

and the stock box pulls just as much air as a an after market CAI.
in my sig also has a link to a gent that tested air filters including cotton types, the benefits are not worth the risk of less filtration.

I'm running the URD TCAI and I felt a difference right away. The intake temps did run around 25°lower than stock. I also coupled it with the URD MAF calibrator and it feels like a V-tech pull in the higher RPM's. I haven't fine tuned the calibrator yet but I know it will make a difference and then*I*can give you guys a dyno.

I had a k&n 63 series and my throttle body and maf sensor got coated in grime within a couple months. Got rid of that and got the afe stage 2 si with pro dry filter. The afe ran a lot cleaner than the k&n but I didnt see a difference in anything. My mpg actually went down a little and I didnt see any improvement in hp. The stock intakes on the tacomas are pretty nice

    URD is also proven

I disagree on the n/a vs f/i claims and there is dyno proof out there, but i agree COMPLETELY on the temperatures. Stock will pull ambient at approx 40MPH and can be easily measured.

Great info..... OP, do plenty of homework here and on http://www.xr-underground.com

    dyno slip?

    incorrect, and theres dyno proof

    he has a 2014

incorrect, the stock 1 is restrictive on the 4.0..... the design of the intake with its baffles, chambers, and bends in order to muffle the sound also costs some performance.
Gadget ran his xrunner on a dyno with the stock setup as a baseline.
Then he ran it without the charcoal trap....NO GAIN
Then he ran the truck with no air filter, and no charcoal trap....NO GAIN
Now we have dynos with the AFE "TRD", and the URD with.......GAINS

The 25 degree drop must be at idle, because the stocker pulls ambient air at approx 40 MPH. I have measured with 3 different gauges.

Ive tested this with these setups and all got to ambient temps at approx 40MPH.

    • BONE STOCK
    • AFE STAGE 2Si (plug in)
    • AFE STAGE 2 SI (plug out)
    • AFE stage 2 Si (plug out AND removed washer fluid tank and have a mesh grille with functional triangles as well as hole cut in radiator support from the URD).
    • URD with shield
    • URD with no shield
again, all pulled ambient temps at cruising. the only way to drop below ambient is basically an icebox.

Ur MAF calibrator is leaning out the fuel in open loop and YES, this is giving you less stumble and waking up the engine.... Just be careful on hot days if going up any large grades.... You can only run so lean.

yes, Ive also had the MAF cal and installed a couple others.....Never run 1 again without being able to flip a switch and disable it.

K&N are supposed to flow great, but at the price of filtering.....ya just cant have the best of both worlds. Ive also seen a handful of K&N slimed maf sensors, even if they have never been oiled by the owner and were straight from K&N... They can come over oiled.
Make sure u clean the MAF sensor and your throttle body after that K&N gummed crap up. Then you MIGHT see some MPG improvement from the AFE (and then again maybe not).
As for a "HP improvement", well thats gunna be so minute that Id only trust a Dyno.
