Was at the auto parts store yesterday and saw an OEM replacement K&N air filter. Was wondering if these filters are as good as they advertize or just an expensive filter? Anyone with experience?

Junk. Stick with stock or oe type. You can get a case of Wix oe style filters for $80 shipped. Should last 100k plus.

    Why are they junk?

I'm curious because I got one maybe 10k miles ago mostly to be able to clean it instead of replacing it.

Ill post the many reasons later. I want to see why this guy thinks it's worth it.

BTW - just an FYI I ran one for tens of thousands of miles and now need a new engine.

Please explain to me how without increasing the surface area of the filter media K&N is able to let in more air. Think about it.

    Ill wait

Oh and looks and sounds are what children like. Function > Form when dealing with a 30k truck and adults IMO.

well lets say last 2 vehicles had them, not sure why my last one went from 1 qt every 5000 miles to all of a sudden at 145K miles I started using 1 qt every 1000 miles but I'm suspecting dirt ingestion and will be staying with OEM filter with my truck. I have no evidence that there was dirt ingestion, no proof that filter had anything to do with it. hell with the Tacoma I'm even just staying with OEM oil filter.

    Exactly!

It's simple. K&N uses larger holes in their filtering media that allows larger particles to flow through thus ruining your engine quicker.

It's impossible to increase flow without either increasing the size of the shit you let flow through or increasing the amount of filter media. Drop in filters actually have less media than OE and allow more airflow so it's a double whammy of shit for your engine.

I wouldn't even run a K&N in an on road car let alone anything that goes offroad and sees dust.

Worst product ever made for offroad engines.

and I used to run them for over 15 years on everything I owned so I know.

I ran one for a little while before getting my AEM intake. Difference is very minimal. To ME it seemed like the engine didnt have to work as hard during passing....but could just me. Worth it? no.

Thanks for the heads up! I'll swap it out next oil change.

Its obvious that the K&N filters are design to let more air in... However, they compensate for that by oiling their filters to collect outside air/dust (avoiding large particles of crap flying in). Its not the worse thing you can own... there are pro's and con's to owning one.

increased airflow (minimal increase in HP gains). Not ideal for trucks, but for sporty cars yeah.

I had a cone K&N with a Ken Bell ram air on my Mustang for years & a drop in in my Explorer for a decade. After seeing all the crap a drop in let into my MAF in the Taco after a few months....never again on anything. Screw minimal gains for insufficient filtering.

I used to think they were great. Now I come to realize how wrong I was for so long.

& who wants to wait hours after a cleaning for one to dry before you can drive? Now if I'm on a super dusty multi day trail run I can swap a filter in a minute.

I was a little off....been a few years since I bought them. Case of 6 was $83 to my door. http://www.discountfleetsupply.com/wix46888.html

I have run K&N filters for over 35 years with no problems!!Some people just don't know how to use them.I have 2 that way they have plenty of time to dry and absorb the oil.I also run a pre filter on my filters water shed off when they get wet.I use to run them on my 95hp Yamaha Banshee in nothing but sand and never had a problem. So maybe it's the people using them.Oh and why do a lot of the off road racers use them!!
